Perhaps they didn't run the game benchmarks due to the business orientation of the notebook.

Yes, you can game with it.

I wouldn't look at pcmag, pcquest, cnet etc for reviews on anything!! Many times those guys don't know what they are talking about.

X1400 is a decent graphics card with a lot of updated technologies. It would play most games at decent graphics levels. In fact, most people steer clear of the FireGL because of worries that the business driver/firmware isn't completely DX9 compatible (pretend or not).

As for the 7800 GTX performance on the Dell vs Gateway vs the X1400 TravelMate, several things can affect 3D scores outside the GPU. If there are lots of textures, system memory differences (speed and capacity and dual channel configuration) and even harddrive speed can affect the scores. Also, there are cases where they cripple cards for some reason or another (such as the low end MacBook Pro's X1600).

EDIT: Dell e1705 review at pcmag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1908404,00.asp
It has a throttled down 7800 GTX, 533 MHz memory, only 1 stick rather than the 2x512MB config whereas
    Gateway review at pcmag: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1937795,00.asp
Probably full speed 7800 GTX, 533MHz memory, 2x512 and 1x1024 memory configs available (not sure which is used)
