For instance, out of 18 T-series, 3 are running 64-bit, the rest are 32-bit. Any idea why so many are 32-bit machines? Seems like that would be the exception on 64-bit processors instead of the norm.

most of these machines are restock, so basically they are returns from customers, which means the original purchaser of these laptops must have ordered 32 bit OS.

Personally, most of people i know whom purchased thinkpads overlook the 32 bit versus 64 bit bit factors (i was one of those people when i first got Thinkpads from Lenovo online stores), and lot of people just leave the OS on the default option, which is the Windows 7 Home Premium editions.

In that case, why is 32-bit the default? :)

They had the same state of affairs for the T61P. Quiet frankly, I figured that it was because it was cheaper.

I feared that you would have a licensing problem BUT it's still the same processor. It's just a diffrent disk.

I think by default, Lenovo has the OS to be 32bit on most (if not all) preconfigured models (also sold by resellers). Otherwise, you can order a laptop configured with 64bit directly through Lenovo using the CTO(configure to order) process. Since the outlet is stocked mostly by returns, I think you'll see a greater number of machines with 32bit.

You can also use this thread to do a clean install of 64bit, so no worries.

The serial no. Works for both the 32 bit and 64 bit os.

yes, but you can easily upgrade the system to the 64 bit OS, the customer whom returned the machine must have configured the system with 8 gigs. These people may or may not understand the 32 bit limit, while others are just future proofing, and a small batch of customers have their own custom OS installation they use.
