First off, shutting down the computer and letting it sit overnight unplugged consumes 1% of the battery life. Hibernating unplugged overnight drops it 10%. I've turned off 'always on usb' in the bios. Anyone know why it uses power while hibernating? (not using hybrid sleep either). This is Vista Business 32bit.

Go to your device manager, and go through every device. If the device has a power management tab, make sure that you un check any options that allow the device to wake the computer. That should take care of your power use problem. If any devices are able to wake the computer then they cannot be shut down and must remain in a 'low power' state to be able to wake the computer.

I had the same problem and found that after doing a BIOS update, the Wake on LAN had gotten reactivated. After turning this off (and double checking the XP device driver power settings for equipment) all seems to be working fine.

Thanks a lot. It was the modem and sound card (why the hell could a sound card wake the computer?). Also, all of the 'USB Root Hubs' were set to not be able to be turned off to save power. I checked that box.

Ah yes, that's a good point, I forgot to mention that you should also check that all the bios wake settings are disabled if you want everything to truly be off.
Why does my T61 use power in hibernate?
