I just got a T61 T7300 100g HD 7200rpm, 2 gig mem. It seems very slow. My hd light seems to run all the time. Does anyone else experience this?

    Thanks,

    Rut

You probably have a lot of spyware on your computer and lots of unnecessary processes running in the background or at startup.

What you need is a good cleaning and defrag. You can use CCleaner and the basic Windows defragger. For the spyware, get AdAwareSe and clean your machine out.

As for the startup/processes, look around on the forum and you will find several guides about eliminating those.

Well since I just got it Thursday I wouldn't think there is a lot of spyware on it (unless lenovo installed it). I check task manager but can't see anything obvious running (using cpu cycles).

Well it's not necessarily your cpu cycles that are being used. I recall your initial problem was with the hard drive being accessed a lot. So while these processes might not take a lot of cpu cycles, they can be accessing your hard drive unnecessarily.

And since you just got it, I assume it's loaded up with startup and processes, not to mention that you have Vista which you didn't say in your original post.

Vista uses superfetch to load the most used data/program files in that 2GB, so HD will run at start for minute or two after you are logged in, but after that it should stop

    anitvirus?

    Disable Windows search indexing:

Type "services" in the Start search box
click "Continue" if asked for permission to run the program
scroll down to "Windows search", right click and select "Properties"
    click "Stop"
on "Startup Type" drop down, select "Disabled."

My X61s was really slow out of the box, with the hard disk activity going non-stop. In my case I believe it was a Vista deficiency -- the problem went away after I replaced the OS. Maybe the disk activity goes down after Vista indexes your data, but I don't know.

Clean install is the only way forward my friend, my T61 was the same out of the box, pretty sluggish. Now its clean installed and tweaked, flied along nicely now...

^^^ Yep, a clean install will make all the difference. You wouldn't think that would be the case for a brand new laptop right out of the box, but the difference after a clean install is like night and day. Most anyone that has done a clean install will agree.
