There's got to be something else besides its exclusive leather skin.

Doesn't it have maxed out specs and a special tech support line (i.e. probably more helpful)

Yeah, the main thing is the insane tech support that comes with it. I think it's something crazy like you call them and they send someone over within two hours. Plus, you can call them however much you want. The only other thing is the leather it's wrapped in. Overall, I don't really think it's worth it. It seems to me to be just something for rich CEOs to get for fun.

The hardware is the least expensive part of the notebook IMO. The specs are nearly the same as a preconfigured X61s. It comes with 3GB of memory maybe, but that's not what makes it so expensive.

The most expensive part about the notebook is the tech support. As someone mentioned earlier, someone will come over to your house within 2 hours, and the fact that it's a limited production model.

I think it's actually 4 hours in major cities, dedicated tech support (no hold times or multiple menus), etc etc. Probly costs a lot to set that up when no other products have it

I tend to look at it from a business angle that Lenovo is being opportunistic in this 15th anniversary of the ThinkPad to launch an ultra-expensive version as a commemorative notebook for the enthusiastic collectors.

Lenovo takes this opportunity to "position" this notebook as a special edition so as to justify its higher price.

It is similar to premium brand like Montblanc which tends to launch this or that special edition whenever it can justify it, so as to sell it at higher then usual price.

    It is just business tactic.

I don't think it's anything special like the leather or what not.

It wouldn't be that special of a laptop if it only cost 2000. They have to make something that stands out.

honestly, i would hate to have a leather wrapping around my thinkpad, can it be removed or is permantly fixated? tech support sounds outstanding, but unnecessary; perhaps for ceo's who need to have theirs fixed immedietly, but then again, I am sure they have an IT staff at their hands and feet to fix it immedietly as well

Yeah, why would you call lenovo as an exec, if you have a bunch of propriety apps and tech staff downstairs?

Meaning, by the pricing, justified by instant support, they figure most execs won't actually use it.

    1. It's exclusive.
    2. A whole company at your service 24/7.
    3. Leather lets everyone know that you have something they don't have and probably can't have.

screw the leather..it makes it look ugly..the solid black looks much, much better

I think it's just to say you have something exclusive.that's all...and forget the 24/7 service..i would never utilize it as i have no problems with it

Why wouldn't you just buy a X61s instead of buying this and trying to remove the leather cover. Personally, I think the leather cover is classy but certainly not worth the additional cost.

Because it is a limited quantity luxury item.
The quantity demanded for luxury items doesn't vary greatly with price.
They could have charged 10K for it and people would still buy it.

well it's a special edition so it's bound to be more expensive. I am curious how they cool the system with all that leather wrapping around the notebook.

The leather is fashioned by Japanese saddle-makers.
