The cheapest W700 costs $1.2-1.5k even in the outlet. Why is there no "mainstream" spec 17-inch ThinkPad for everyday office tasks? I work on Excel a lot and find 15.6" too "small" for big spreadsheets.

because not alot of people use 17 inch laptops, they are also more expensive to produce. if you feel that the 15.6 inch LCD is too small, then just get an external LCD.
Even if Lenovo did produce a mainstream Thinkpad 17 inch, it won't cost less than $1.2 k. If you can't afford the price of a new or outlet model, then find a second hand one or get a consumer grade 17 inch laptop. -
You can pack a lot of power in a 17''. No reason to go mainstream. It's just not practical.

I mean, you need a pretty hefty chassis simply to make 17" rigid enough - and if you made hefty chassis already, makes no sence to waste it by not putting heftier coomponents on it. -
