I have just upgraded the memory from 1 GB (2*512 MB Samsung memory preinstalled) to 2 GB (2* 1 GB Corsair Value Select) in a Thinkpad R61i (entry level 1.46GHz intergrated Intel graphics).

To my surprise my Vista index memory score remained unchanged but my graphics score jumped 2 whole points. Shouldn't the memory score increase?

Does anybody know whats going on?

My Index Scores before & (after) upgrade :

    Processor: 4.6 (4.6)
    Memory: 4.2 (4.2)
    Graphics: 3.1 (5.1)
    Gaming; 3.3 (3.3)
    Hard Disk: 4.9 (4.9)

First, the WEI is a notoriously poor evaluation of a system; second, it probably has to do with the fact that integrated graphics grab a portion of system RAM for its own use, and the amount reserved thereto depends, in part, on how much is available - by doubling the available system RAM, you have effectively increased the amount of RAM available to, and reserved for, the integrated graphics, thereby increasing the graphics power insofar as WEI is concerned.

yeah, i think you got the golden ticket in your chocolate bar. maybe now you get a tour of microsoft. anyway, looks like Vista is being silly. Should not affect you in any negative way so just keep doing whatever it is your doing.

Perhaps Vista thinks the IGP suddenly has 4GB available for use and doesn't think there has been any actual system memory added?

    Strange.

Trust me, if the WEI was reliable, all the sheep in the world would be made from vacuum cleaners. Take it with a large spoon of salt.

    There's news.

After a few restarts & a couple of refreshes of the Vista index - my memory score has increased by 0.1 to 4.3. But graphics (Aero) still ranked 5.1.

Memory shows correct in System Information as 2GB & Vista Premium is now actually useable, where before with 1 GB it ran like a dog. According to the Intel driver utility maximum graphics memory is 448MB.

Is 4.3 a particularly low score for 2 GB of ddr2 pc5300 or have I installed a graphics card by mistake?

Well, I would say not to rely on the WEI too much. 2Gb is a good amount. Don't worry. If your computer runs stable and up to speed, who care what your WEI is, right?
