So we bought a computer a couple of years ago that would 'just work'.

Her wireless drivers from Intel for the 3945ABG have nearly always seemed to perform on the crap side of quality.

I got a Broadcom like what is used in the Mac's (the draft-N version), and had some mixed experiences with it.

Now I want to get the other Mac radio, the atheros Ar5008.
And at about the same time, her Intel radio does not pull an IP from the WHR-HP-G54/DD-WRT/Chillispot box - no problem with other wireless equipment - no encryption either.

All the auctions I can find on ebay say specifically for the radio: 'Not supported' or 'doesn't work in' an IBM/Lenovo or HP.

    What gives with that?

See this ebay.de link for auctions: http://shop.ebay.de/?_from=R40&_nkw=ar5008&_sacat=See-All-Categories

I was able to install the Broadcom (Dell 1500 Draft-N) Mini PCI express drivers.

The card came up when booting the computer. The drivers worked (well, with some quirks but those having nothing to do with the bios rejecting the card).

Which Lenovo's are locked to specific wireless card models? Is there a way to find out before purchasing the card?

I think the whitelisting tends to be more true of ThinkPads than the Lenovo branded notebook. If the machine doesn't work with your router, but is fine elsewhere, perhaps it's the router and not the card with the issues.
