Received my Y550 on 12/17/09. Tried the DVD-RW for the first time today and found it had problems reading and writing disks. Worked with support who verified the hardware problem and wanted to do a depot repair. Since I am within my 21 days I wanted the laptop replaced with new or a full refund. Told me I would have to speak with sales on Monday since they would have to authorize that. I plan on being a bulldog on the issue and don't want what I consider to be a brand new machine fixed. It should be 100% out of the box. What do you think my chances are on getting them to refund or replace the system?

i think you should get a refund and get a Thinkpad instead.... even if it is not that much to look at, but at least you are rest assured the machine is reliable... from what i know the Ideapad has been made by ASUS on behalf of Lenovo. With current sales and coupons, you can pretty much get a decent Thinkpad for a price of an ideapad.

I think you should get an Apple and run Windows on it instead. Forget TP, after the Nvidia fiasco I no longer trust the company and they no longer differentiate themselves versus Dell and HP.

If you are within your rights for a refund you should push hard and not waver if that is what you want.

If the DVD is removeable and its simply a replacement of a removeable part and that suits you I would think its OK. If it is not removeable it could be the motherboard and most likely they would replace the board but with a refurbished one. What is means is its picked from the PC junkyard, repaired, QC tested (questionable), and put in your new PC. This is not aceptable unless you think the salesman is entitled to a commission at your expense. Of course he or she will push hard for you to get the unit repaired. Its his problem how he eats, you shouldnt give a rats a and decline and reject that suggestion.

    Let me organize the facts.
    • OP got a new IdeaPad which turns out to be defective.
    • You recommended a Mac because you "no longer trust Lenovo" after the nVidia fiasco.
    • lead_org observed that Apple was also affected by the nVidia fiasco.
    • Unable to justify your recommendation, you decided to change the topic and call lead_org a fanboy.
    Very nice.

    ....own'd.

OP: Call the CS and escalate the issue if necessary. That should get you at least an exchange if not more. Best of luck.

Are optical drives field replaceable units on Ideapads? If so, they could just send you a new one, you swap it out, and if all is well you're done in a day or two. If not, you can rightly ask for a new machine because motherboard swaps from anyone can be a bit dicey. They're usually fine, but yeah, sometimes you can get stuck with a refurb that wasn't validated properly.

But the second you have to send the machine in, I'd demand an exchange so that you can be sure. And yeah, see what you can do about exchanging for a Thinkpad T series if that would fit your needs.

As far as I can tell the optical drive does not pop out like the battery or other optical drives in other systems I've had.

Well my experience with replacement really sucks , I would recommend a refund. I don't know if the service of Lenovo is bad in every country but mine almost caused me to cry and me thinking to never buy anything of Lenovo ever again.

ideapads have very little field replaceable parts........ i don't like Ideapad they are not of the same quality standards as thinkpad, nor is the warranty service on these machine as easy to deal with as the one on Thinkpad.

I am indeed a fanboy, but i am a logical one at that. I have sold all my T61, R61, T61p that had the Nvidia GPU knowing that i don't want a unpredictable liability on my hand. And i have 3 Macbook Pro (13.3 unibody, 15.4 ATI GPU and the 17 inch ATI GPU)... so one could say i am also a Apple fanboy..... but if you ever drop a Macbook you would know how weak structural it is (i have not dropped the unibody version as of yet, and personally don't want to find out either).

Before you jump the gun on Macbook Pro of any flavour, you should know that Apple have deliberately underclocked some of the GPU to lower heat output.

    http://www.maconintel.com/news.php?article=178

and some of the unibody Macbook Pro are suffering Nvidia GPU failures.

    http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/03/05/17.inch.mbp.video.errors/

Also, it is not advisable that anyone should become a fanboy of any product, without having indepth knowledge of what they are getting themselves into.... in case of electronic products, ignorance is not a bliss........

I hate that. We have some older Acers at work that require you to remove the keyboard to remove the optical drive, and the keyboard itself is difficult to remove. There's really no reason for that, a laptop should require one screw maximum to remove the optical drive, and preferably just a release switch like on the battery.

The previous version ideapad had used ASUS adapter (it was built by ASUS too i presume)..... Some Acer were made by ASUS too.

That is the consumer laptops, which is different to the business laptop like what we use to in Thinkpad.... once you have used a business laptop it is hard to justify going back to Consumer laptops.

Just for the record, I called Lenovo and they agreed to a full refund without any fight. I'll be shipping it out in the morning.
