Hi all. My first post on the forum as I just became interested in buying the T60 or T61.

Well I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I need a laptop for college by mid August. I was planning to buy a Dell 6400 or something similar in July since they're on sale every few weeks for around $800 with very nice specs. But I came upon the sale Lenovo had a few weeks ago for shareholders (15% off) + AMEX TailorMade (10% off) + Fatwallet cash (5%). With all the discounts, some people were able to get the T60 for or under $1000 with the specs I would want.

I wasn't able to get in the deal because I saw it after it ended. After seeing this deal, I realized that I really want a Thinkpad but can't afford to pay more than a $1000.

Right now, Lenovo has a sale until May 14th for the T series with:
    *$275.00 in instant savings!
*Free upgrade to WXGA+ or WSXGA+ display
*$50 discount on 128MB ATI graphics adapter

    So I can get a T60 with 15.4" WSXGA+; Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83ghz; XP Home; 1GB ram; ATI X1400;Fingerprint Reader; CD-RW; 80GB 5400rpm HDD; 9 Cell Battery for $1,304 or $1108 with EPP + 5% back from FatWallet.

My question basically is, should I buy this now or wait until June or July and see if a better sale comes? I've heard that the base price for the T60 is inflated right now from the Share holder sale, and I may be able to save a bit more when the base price goes down. But I don't know if the instant savings and free upgrades will still be there later.

I'm sorry if this is all too confusing. I tried to simplify it, but I'm still a bit confused myself :p . I understand no one can be sure of future deals, but I'd still like opinions since I don't really need the laptop until August.

    Thank you!

If you wait until June there will be sale...but you will hear of a better sale in mid-June...and then rumours of something "new" ...and then another sale...then you will have 2 weeks until you "need" your laptop and it's July...and there's still a sale...

Whenever you buy will likely be the highest price that you will see what you bought moving forward....it will NOT be the lowest price.

Remember that Lenovo has not too great shipping - some items might take 3-4 weeks or longer. Some things might take 1-2 weeks...it seems haphazard.

Chasing price is as futile as chasing technology. There will always be something bigger/better/faster/lighter/cheaper/etc just around the corner. The best tactic is to determine your needs and price point and then find the product that matches those at the time you are ready to purchase.

Yes i agree with you that values tend to improve

But there's no doubt that the best sales come in the summer (back to school sales). Corporate sales for thinkpads are non-existent and the competition for back-to-school is fierce.

Wait til summer if you can, but i also agree that you need to watch your shipping lead time, so dont leave it into August if you nust have it Sept 1

Addendum... make sure the employee whose serial you use for EPP consents to your purchase (at least for IBM EPP)... IBM is increasingly checking with the employee later, and voiding the warranty for an EPP purchase that's not legit.

This is predicted to be a slow year for computer sales which means there is a fairly good chance that there will be discounts later this year as well. Nothing is for certain though, so its kind of a gamble.

Yeah, I think I'll try to wait until mid July before buying just in case there's a sale. If not, I guess I'll just go with Dell.
