I have a T400 with this HD adapter:

Name: Thinkpad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II
    FRU Part Number: 43R1984
    ASM Part Number: 43R1981

Will it work with a T400s or will I have to get another model hard drive adapter?

Good question. I ordered caddy HDD adapter for my T400s, and sales rep recommended Bay Adapter II part you mentioned above. That's what I have on order. Latest updated ThinkPad Tabook has Adapter III listed in T400s section. I have been told that adapters are interchangeable. I guess I only be able to find out in 2 weeks when I get my new toy.

matt kohut says it will work but the bezel won't match perfectly.

Who is Matt Kohut and what hdd caddy does he recommend for T400s? The part Lenovo told me to use is: 43R1980 THINKPAD SERIAL ATA HARD DRIVE BAY ADAPTER II

while latest Tabook has: Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III 43N3412 (06/23/09)

Which one should I get for T400s?

    =======================

UPDATE: Confirmed with Lenovo, Adapter III is the correct part number of T400s hdd caddy.

Anyone know what the difference is between the:

43R1980 ThinkPad Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter II
43N3412 ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III

I believe the III works for the T400s, but both II and III work for the T400. I did a search but couldn't find any info explaining what the real differences is - specs appear to be the exact same, other than the III is about $20 more expensive than the II.

    Thanks.

The bottom line: if you already have Adapter II for your T400, it will work with T400s except bezel mismatch. But if you are buying a new one, by all means invest extra $10 ($59 vs $49) and get Adapter III to match it perfectly!!!

So the difference is only the bezel style...thanks twister.

In Canada the price gap is larger where the III is $64.99 and the II is $47 :p

Man, Lenovo seriously needs to improve their product descriptions. I also noticed that the III shows an incorrect weight of 0.8 kg (should be 0.08).

Does anyone actually have this adapter and tested it in a T400s? I just got one tonight, the II not the III as CDW didn't have any III's in stock.

None of my hard drives work. I tried 2 Toshiba's and a Seagate. Tried to do the HD test in the BIOS and it says "Ultrabay hard disk drive is not found. Please check Ultrabay hard disk drive."

The BIOS takes a while trying to detect the HD it appears, but doesn't seem to detected it. It takes a while to get past the BIOS screen if I let it boot (and Windows of course doesn't see the HD).

I wonder if the II adapter truly isn't compatible.

People are talking about some differences in the bezel, but it actually seems to line up and fit fine. If anything, the color seems a bit off.

Anyway, if anyone can say 100% that this adapter should work, I'll just go get a different one tomorrow. Otherwise, maybe the II really doesn't work in the T400s?

    An update...

I received the III adapter and now everything is fine.

So either my II adapter was broke, or the II truly doesn't work with the T400s.

I did open up the II and the III and the II had an extra chip inside that the III doesn't have. The III doesn't have a chip like that in there. I didn't write down or take a picture of the chip like I should have.

Anyway, be forewarned, you may want to not risk buying the II adapter like I did (CDW took it back) and just get the III for the T400s.

I bought a generic of the II adapter on ebay for my T400s and it got stuck in my computer and wouldn't eject. I was going to just get an exchange for it but now that I read your post I am going for the III adapter.

    Thanks!
