I've been struggling with making a slipstream CD with all the drivers and whatnot for my new SL400 but I can't quite get it to work.

I was wondering if Vista would install more easily?

My laptop shipped with DOS only.

After all this trouble, I don't mind going out and buying a cheap basic version of Vista if it'll mean I can actually use my Laptop!

Vista should solve your problem, as it has AHCI driver integrated into the install, so you don't have to slipstream anything.

If you can handle running a beta, download the Windows 7 beta for free use until August.

Well, there's the perfect reason why computer manufacturers strongly discourage people from buying computers without a pre-installed OS. You have to know what you're doing. For the record, slipstreamed XP discs do work on the SL400. You must not have slipstreamed the correct drivers.

I'd suggest just installing Vista in your case. It's much easier to work with and use.
