I'm curious if I disable the IR port on my X30, will that extend my battery life? It's not like I use the IR port anyway.

Also, are there any tips for maximum battery life? I've set the brightness level to the lowest, added more RAM, and turned off wireless when I'm not using it.

The IR sensor functions via a light sensitive diode junction, this is a very low power consumption device when not in use, and really it doesn't use much power when its in use either.

The OS does however periodically check the port to see if its active, even if your not using it, thus disabling it will of course lower power usage and increase battery life. You will however not likely notice the difference as the additional life wouldn't be more than perhaps a couple minutes at most.

My advice would be if you don't use it, disable it, there is no reason to leave it on if its not something you use. It can simply be turned back on should you have use for it later anyway ;)

As far as other suggestions to increase battery life, what you mentioned is a good start; If you use the screensaver a lot, consider going into standby or sleep mode instead. Also try not to let your battery get drained down to extreme levels, the default power down schemes are that way for a reason. If you allow your battery to constantly get very low, the overall life of the psychical battery will be affected as well as the battery output usage duration.

    Great first post!

I'm trying to squeeze out as much battery life as I can, so I disabled the IR like you said. As for the screensaver, my power scheme puts the notebook in standby way before the screensaver even begins. :)
