Help! I was all set to get an X61s with ultralight screen (1.8GHz processor) when I noticed it said it was also brighter. I actually do not like very bright screens - I currently use the next to lowest setting on my ancient IBM thinkpad X21 model (which I love). Does anyone know which screen would be closer to the old X21? (I once had to return a dell laptop because the screen was too bright). I was going to go with the ultrlight screen because I value a lightweight laptop and it seemed like the newer option, but the brightness issue is more important. Should I go with the other screen? Would that be closer to the traditional IBM X21 screens? If so, I have to go with the 1.6 GHz processor-should I expect any problems/differences from that? Is the laptop much heavier with the other (non-ultrlight) screen? Thanks much; I need new laptop in hurry!

You can always turn the brightness down.
-
The weight difference is pretty small between ultralight and non..
For me it would not be worth the additional cost.
And yeah you can always set the brightness down pretty low. -
Compared to a glossy screen, it's not that bright.

Thnks - decided I will go with ultrlight- I'll hope turning level wy down will be dim enough. I like it being 3 ounces lighter nd it's worhth the cost for me. I think you're right tht the mtte finish might mke ll the difference - mybe it's theglossy screens I don't like
Ok so 61s with ultrlight screen-while I don't need the extr bttery power, I'm hoping the lower voltge of the 61s compred to the 61 will men slightly cooler running temps.
Here re other choices- hven't ordered yet- will do so in next couple of dys, so input or comments on my resoning below would be welcome. Concerned the mchine will be too noisy too, but there's nothing I cn do bout tht.
1.8GHz - hopefully low voltge enough to not get too hot but still hve more power thn the 1.66GHz
2GB of memory on 1 DIMM (to be able to add another 2GB later)
80GB hrd drive (I think will be lrge enuf -concerned bout noise, but is any other drive quieter??, not sure is worth the extra 35 for the 120GB drive-not sure).
Turbo memory cache-I'm not sure its worth the 50 bucks so not sure wht to do. Their tch people sy 10-20% fster when running Vist, my tech person sys much less thn tht. If it is fster, seems worth the expense, ssuming it does not add more than 1 ounce to the weight.
Integrted bluetooth - negligble weight dded (I hope no more thn 1 ouce)
Wifi- this one's hrd cll for me. I've red Intel works better, but gets hotter! I don't know how to mke the trdeoff.
4 cell Slim line battery - save another few ounces nd I don't need long bttery life for this mchine.
Will also upgrde to 3yr depot wrrenty (seemd worth the extr money) but pssing on the lenovo phone chat option. Opting for Vista Basic.
(deferring base and optical drive for another time).
Any comments or help? If the mchine is too bright, noisy, or hot, I may hve to give up IBM/lenovo for good this time.
Suggestions for good financial deal?
Sorry for the typing- youc n see one of the resons I need knew mchine quick -
Lol, I was about to make a comment about your post. You were dropping letters here and there and I wasn't sure if it was on purpose.
Yes, a low voltage processor is supposed to suck less power than the equivalent processor.
120gb shouldn't be any louder than the 80gb. Noise is influenced more by drive speed, 5400 vs 7200 rpm rather than size. Manufacturer and drive motor make a difference as well.
Turbo memory is up to you. It's not going to be 10-20% faster but it may help a bit. If you plan on having 4gb of ram later then you could forego this.
You won't have a problem with an x61s being too bright, noise or hot.
I don't think anyone has complained about a thinkpad being too bright.
x61s generally uses lower speed HD which is quieter.
They run fairly cool.
Will the Ultralight screen be too bright for my needs?
