I am going to get my CTO at the end of this week and i wanted to ask if I upgraded from the 1gb to 4gb if it would really help performance? I know that xp pro will only see 3gb. thanks in advance.

I'm assuming the system is configured with 1 Gb and you're adding aftermarket RAM onto it.

It sure won't hurt altho with XP if you're not dealing with huge media files or DBMS records, 1Gb is still fine. With Vista its a different story. Why go 4GB? A 2Gb stick ( + the current factory 1Gb =3Gb total) will be cheaper and just as good.

yes. the more ram the better. windows will restrict the addressing of all the memory but i suggest you buy 2 X 2GB sticks elsewhere. you can find 4GB of memory at www.frys.com or www.buy.com for about $75.00

sweetness and thanks for the replies. down the line i might upgrade to vista ultimate after all of the issues get worked out with it so the 4gb will pretty much future proof me.

I usually have my XP machines run at 2gb minimum.

If the laptop already has one 1GB SODIMM installed, save the coin and trouble by just adding one 2GB SODIMM for a total of 3GB.

Note for all those fervent fans of dual channel mode: 3GB installed as 1GB + 2GB *will* run in asymmetric dual channel mode.
