Well I heard switching to Compatibility mode for XP is ideal, you may want to try and see if Service Pack 3 slipstreamed on the disc can solve this particular problem. You can also try and include the latest SATA drivers from Intel ( Intel Rapid Storage Drivers) instead of Lenovo's Matrix Storage Drivers - they're essentially the same thing but the Intel ones are generally newer than the ones Lenovo gives out.

You can use nLite which simplifies the slipstreaming process tremendously. Simply copy the contents of the XP disc on to the hard drive, point nLite to SP3 (under Service Packs/Hotfixes) and then add the SATA drivers on top. Afterwards nLite will recompile the disc contents and allows you to burn the slipstreamed image to use.

Of you could install Windows 7. Works great on the T400.

Lenovo did ship some later T400 with Win 7 OS, and it is a good operating system. Right now my X200 have only 2 gigs of ram, and it is working much better than when it was under Vista Business with the same amount of ram.

windows XP does not include SATA drivers, then if your T400 is in AHCI mode, Windows XP will not be able to be installed (BSOD at loading, right?).

my solution was: switch to IDE compatible mode, install XP, then install Lenovo Intel Matrix Storage Lenovo Support & downloads - Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver for Windows 7 (32-bit), Vista (32-bit) and XP (32-bit) - ThinkPad, then switch back to AHCI mode. Done!

    Good luck.

It's been awhile since I had done the XP/T400 install. IIRC I did the something very similar to vimvq1987 and had no problems.

Lenovo even has a guide on their site. "installation instructions" or something similar that explains this in detail.
