Windows 7 has both a repair function and an upgrade function if you have the original DVD. We do not with our Thinkpads. The upgrade function is apparently a super repair function and upgrades nothing but simply reinstalls all of the original OS without messing with files/programs/settings/etc.

I would like to do this on my 4 year old W520, but don't have the original DVDs because I bought a Thinkpad. Is there an entry to accomplish this in our recovery section? I have too much invested to do a restore to factory state but would love to access this interesting Microsoft Windows function if Lenovo hasn't completely deactivated it.

    Thank you for your help.

What are you exactly trying to accomplish? Recovery section doesn't contain the resources that you're looking for, not to mention that on the systems that are running an SSD, that's the first thing to get nuked in my house.

To put it differently: what is bothering about regarding your current install?
