    Windows 7 T400 Power Saving Tip

    For those of you who did a clean install of Windows 7, you might have noticed the system using a little more power than you hoped for while on battery. I have noticed this as well for quite a while and have now found the culprit.

    I recently installed several non-beta Windows 7 drivers from Lenovo and noticed my DVD drive was powered off as a result—AND I could not get it back on. As such, I installed the new Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver ( http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67738) and all is well again.

    The installation of this driver has brought my power usage down to ~10W while idle—whereas before my machine was using ~12W.

    Now I can get my DVD drive powered on (I hadn't tried since installing some other things) but I think it moved up my power usage slightly but we'll see for sure when the week starts.

    One thing to keep in mind is that the Intel Matrix driver on Lenovo website DOES NOT SUPPORT TRIM. Only the default Microsoft driver supports TRIM at this moment. This is important if you're using SSDs that support TRIM. Intel is working on releasing a new driver that will support TRIM, but nobody knows how long it will take.
