    Hello there.

I recently purchased a Thinkpad X1 Carbon which came pre-installed with Windows 7 Pro, but also included a Windows 8 Pro upgrade DVD.

Now, as you probably know, the X1 Carbon doesn't have an optical drive so I can't actually use this disc.

My question is if there is any way for me to use this via a USB flash drive as I don't own a USB optical drive.

The label on the DVD itself says

    "Operating System Recovery Disc
Windows 8 Pro (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)"

The files on the disc are not the usual files you'd see on a Windows installation disc.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Since you can use a USB flash drive to install Windows 7, I would presume there's a way to do it in Windows 8, though I have no first hand experience. You might want to poke around the Windows forum for more info.

I would suggest borrowing an optical drive to make the Windows 7 recovery discs and installing Windows 8. It'll be easier to go back to 7 with the recovery discs if you don't like 8.
