Does anyone know if I can upgrade my windows to windows 8 yet?
Thanks!

Well I found out yes.
I think i'll do a simple Google search next time the forum seems to be lazy like I
Drivers and software - IdeaPad Y580 Notebook
for drivers -
Im currently downloading my Win8 upgrade. Im guessing I just install the Win8 upgrade then install the drivers? No need to uninstall old ones?
How are you going about on yours? -
I'm using the upgrade adviser, I'll be keeping apps, data and settings. I figure if it screws up I'll be reformatting either way
Once done, unless there are driver problems I wont even bother upgrading lol, although tbh I'd rather have the latest drivers anyways
EDIT
For people that are having issue with the "Never Slow Down" app that needs to be uninstalled, go to control panel and in Uninstall it's called "NSD"
Uninstall that and your done -
Wow I finally got it to work...I had to seperate the drives and install windows on my SSD...
OKAY So the windows 8 drivers from lenovo are garbage. 90% of them don't work while 5% aren't 64 bit lol.
So just use windows 7 drivers. I would also suggest not installing anything to do with usb 3.0 since Windows 8 has it natively.
Tips Will keep it updated!
-To install Lenovo power management I had to install the windows 7 version first then the windows 8 version. -
After upgrading to Win8, i did a reset to factory default and its taking ages to finish!
-
why did it download build 9200 Windows pro? Isn't that from aug 2012? :S
-
I used the upgrade adviser as well.. I already successfully upgraded to Win8, but then decided to completely wipe my hard drive for a fresh install.

Anyone here got trouble with windows 8 wifi after installation? Mine internet speed drops from 5mb to 1mb while others devices are ok. I think it's a driver problem so i re-download the latest versions from lenovo site ( released 24 Oct), some of them can't be installed.

I upgraded last night with the upgrade advisor...did not go well. Lost HDMI output, could not click on the sound icon in the sys tray. Reloaded drivers for the intel 4000, nvida 660, etc. with no help.
Thought maybe it was a corrupt install, so I did a refresh. It removed a bunch of the stock Lenovo drivers and most of my programs. I can now click on the sound icon without errors, but still no video out. (Pushing video to a HDMI TV is one of the main things I use this laptop for!!) Default mouse drivers etc. also suck compared to the way it worked when it was out of the box with windows 7. (default mouse driver does not turn the pad off when typing....ughh!)
Thinking of trying the drivers again post refresh, including the chipset drivers. -
nevermind. upgrading over existing OS always sucks.

I finally got it working, So I had an old version of windows 8...it wouldn't even activate! lol
Everything is running perfectly, but I do miss my SSD running with my msata as one drive. I'm not really sure how to do that again lol.
I now have 2 separate drives, one 256 and one 64. It doesn't really bother me I can use the 64 for none steam games and the 256 for steam
Other than that, everything seems to work 100%. The volume and sound buttons display using windows 8 which looks much better than lenovo's. As for the track-pad it took some doing but I finally got it to be disabled using function + F6, although there is no visual display that shows you doing it. You can see it near the clock though.
I'm really liking this windows, although it does take some getting use to, the native USB 3.0 is soooooo fast! Also windows seems to boot just under 2 seconds faster. The theme is also refreshing and also the new personalization!
I think this definitely has potential over 7, but it does need to be a little more mouse friendly, although it did make me want to buy a touch screen lol! -

Everything excluding PCI simple is Jmicron Reader, I had to install the windows 7 version for it to work
PCI Simple seems to be the chipset (Intel Management Interface) Just install the windows7 64 bit version, make sure you hit yes to overwrite the files when you extra for this particular driver
Install the above 2 and your done -
I tried the upgrade and kept getting errors. Reinstalled as a fresh install and so far so good. I've only had my Y580 a few days so can't really say if things are better or worse....faster, slower, or the same.
Not sure how I feel about Windows 8....definitely going to take some getting use to. Feels like Windows was bought up by Google and this is the Android/Windows OS.
TWO GRAPHICS ?'s:
1) NOT overly impressed with the screen. Max res on the intel 4000 chip is 1366x768 and the display seems 'grainy'/standard def. Maybe a driver issue?
2) I did download a game so I was going to try my first shot at the GTX660M.....but first I thought I'd update the driver. Nvidia says the proper driver is the 306.97 whql driver.....however when I try to install it says the hardware was not found. Do I need to force the PC to run on the GTX prior to installing the driver? If so...how do I force it to run nvidia?
Thanks
Also....for those that have added an SSD.....worth the effort/cost? -
Windows 8 definitely cuts the boot time by a couple of seconds in my personal experience...also the shut down is noticeably faster. Yes it takes some getting use to but i actually am starting to love it. If they ever made it Gmail friendly I think I would never EVER be incomplete with PC
I'd go as far as to want to buy a touch screen just to use even more of it's featuresWe'll still see some VAST improvements over the next couple of months and I think most ppl should have this OS broken in by the first Service pack
Just install the latest Beta drivers from Nvidia, I think they are 310.33 or something like thatYou shouldn't have to force the Nvidia card to install anything.
P.S
I think windows 8 is turning out A LOT more Laptop friendly when it comes to drivers and features IMO. Build in Brightness and sound visual and over all Laptop feel -
Just bought a Crucial M4 256gb msata ssd today. Got it installed and now doing a fresh install of Windows 8 on it. I will erase the whole 1tb hdd for my storage. I also burned the factory image recovery disc in case i want to go back to its original factory state.
Edit: here is my Windows Experience Index
