I'm migrating my xp system to windows 7 professional and have already copied all my files to an external drive; I'm using windows easy transfer in hopes I won't have to reinstall all of my apps -- but it's indicating it will take 12 hours! This doesn't sound right. I checked my Task Manager and the app seems to be running, but that is slow as molasses. Slower. I'm copying to a usb powered 640gb external drive. My lappy is of course plugged into the wall socket. What gives?

Time estimates for these sort of things can often be wildly off. 30 GBs is a lot of data and programs, so you'll just have to be patient.

It doesn't seem like that much data -- dragging and dropping, the files can be moved in around a half an hour. I'm sure Easy Transfer does something more complicated than that, but still -- does seem like a lot of time. I'll be patient. Let me check. Nope, still transferring. Let me check again. Still transferring. Let me check one more time.....

It's a pretty normal time. Copying a single 30GB file over USB 2.0 should take approx 20min at 25MB/s. However copying thousands of small files totaling 30GB could take hours. There is quite a substantial overhead for setting up a file to be transfered.
