Hi folks, I'm really at my witts end here. Microsoft support won't help, Lenovo support can't help, so I'm seriously hoping that someone here can give me some direction!
I just did a clean install of vista and ran windows update. Just under half of the updates "failed."
I continued to install the other updates.
Now, when I go to "Update History" it shows ~30 failed updates which are either "required" or "recommended." There's also about 40 successfull ones. (see screenshot)
But when I go to try to search for more updates, it tells me that there are no new ones to get, despite having 30 failed ones that were never installed. (see screenshot)
Has windows simply given up on installing those updates? A search for the error code turned up nothing. Here's a sample:
Code:Security Update for Windows Vista (KB933579) Installation date: 02/03/2008 2:26 AM Installation status: Failed Error details: Code 80071A90 Update type: Important A security issue has been identified in Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) that could allow an attacker to compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. Maybe the "failed" ones were already included in later roll-up patches that were downloaded earlier?

I was getting the 8000ffff error and this is what I found online:
1: Open up "Control Panel" and navigate your way to "Programs and Features".
2: Click "View installed updates" on the left hand side.
3: Find the update KB929777 and uninstall it.
4: Attempt to install the update again in Windows Update
5: Once successful, restart your PC. -
ahhh. i'm a moron.
sorry folks. windows vista decided to not only list my successfull updates, but also keep the failed ones there too. so the same update was listed twice, once failed, once successfull.
ugh....another vista peeve. thanks tho!
(if anybody knows how to erase those failed ones from the list, that would be greatly appreciated) -
You might want to consider installing SP1 for Vista --It probably has all of your failed updates rolled up into it.
