    Hi,

following the problems i have with 2d performance with my T61, specifically not being able to play full hd content without heavy tearing.

What i wanted to ask is the scores that windows vista gives to your hardware, and what the specs are, in view of trying to solve this problem. I believe that CPU and Graphics card are the specs that matter for this.

    Specs:
    Thinkpad T61
    Nvidia Quadro NVS140M
    Core2Duo T7300

    Scores:
    Processor: 5.1
    Memory (RAM): 4.8
    Graphics: 4.0
    Gamming Graphics: 4.7
    Primary Hard Disk: 4.8

I believe the problem is demonstrated at the 3rd item, but wanted to compare to other similar systems.
Also if anyone had the same problem and managed to solve it, i would appreciate any help!

    Thanks for your help! :)

define HD content...Dvd's , games, downloaded vids, ect..
There have been similar posts on this forum that recommend turning your activeprotection sensor down to a lower setting.

I've got a T61 with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M, 4GB RAM, and an Intel T8300 and my scores are:

    Processor: 5.3
    Memory 5.4
    Graphics: 4.0
    Gaming Graphics: 4.7
    Primary Hard Disk: 5.0

Obviously the Quadro 140M isn't a heavy gaming card. It's just there to offload processing from an on-board solution and provide DX10 capabilities. It does do alright--I mean a 4.0 isn't that bad for a relatively cheap discrete card. I've seen Vista scores of 5.9 for the 256MB Quadro 570M in the forum before.

I haven't tried watching HD content yet on my laptop yet.

Just for fun, yesterday I did a trial install of Vista Business 32-bit on my old ThinkPad R40 just to see what Vista scores it would get.

    Here's the hardware:

    Intel Pentium M 1.5 GHz
    512 PC 2700 RAM
    40 GB 5400rpm IDE HDD
    ATI Radeon Mobility 7500

    Processor: 3.2
    Memory: 2.9
    Graphics: 1.9
    Gaming Graphics: 1.0
    Primary HDD: 4.2

    techboydino,
what i meen by hd content is movies. My brother has a Sony full hd camera, and we tryied to watch the films done there on my laptop connected to a Samsung LE46M87BD LCD screen.
The result was unbearable. There were lots of droped frames, and we gave up trying to watch it in the first 10seconds.
We tried with a Sony SZ3 laptop (few moths old, has a nvidia 7400 or something similar) and it worked with no problems!
A friend also gave me a hd movie to try out in x264 format, with the exact same results.
What is that ActiveProtection Sensor you talk about?

    msmcougar,
i am aware of the fact that 3D isn't one of the strong points of this card, nor do i need it for anything. If i had the possibility i would have gone with the X3100 instead of the NVS140M, for battery life purposes. But since i had to get stuck with the nvidia card, at least it should be able to perform as it should. Not only did i lose 0.5 to 1 hour of battery time because of this, but also i cant do anything with the lost battery time... I find that a bit enervating.

    Thanks!

I wish Microsoft would have never implemented a scoring system because it confuses a good portion of people.

First let me say that you can safely disregard any scores obtained from this system. They are useless and mean nothing. PERIOD! (I've had a few people try and argue this but they are wrong)

If you are experiencing graphical issues I would heavily suggest you go to lenovo.com and pull up your specific model under their "Support & Downloads" section. Download the latest graphic driver they have available.

Then using one of the many helpful guides on these forums uninstall your old drivers properly. *IMPORTANT* Make sure you uninstall them properly or your issue may remain. See the second post in this thread for a how-to guide by me.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=209796

After trying that get back to us and let us know if your problem is resolved. Also, when you received your laptop did you do a clean install or are you running with all the pre-loaded stuff that came with the laptop? That could be contributing/causing your issue as well.

    Hackez, thanks for your reply.
I'm only using the score system as a relative comparison to other somewhat similar systems and not as an absolute measure of performance.
I did a full reinstall as per a guide present on this forum, which i followed very thoroughly.
I am using the latest drivers from lenovo. I used the ones in lenovo website, and then ones that Windows Update had on their site. BOTH produced the same problem, although the one at WU site did increased my Gaming Performance score by 0.1. The old one, the one at Lenovo's, i don't know the version, but the one WU installed is 174.31.

I also tried not your guide, but another one similar also present on this forum, to install Geforce drivers on a Quadro chip, but for some reason after the reboot Vista won't accept the driver in the way that the cards just disappears from the system. A example is on Display Settings it says "Thinkpad Display 1440x900 on [Blank Space]". This happens with whatever version i try.
I've used CCleaner and other similar programs to completely uninstall the old drivers, after running the uninstall programs of the drivers it self.

I see that you updated your guide recently, and will try with the 174.16 later on. I'll post the results later!

    Thanks!

My guide only enables GeForce features on the Quadro 570M FX. You can use my modded INF if you so choose but it has no effect whatsoever. (Its the equivalent of downloading the driver from laptopvideo2go)

I would never trust a WU recommendation on video drivers, if not all drivers. It tends to create more issues that it solves. (Just a general insight)

On the Windows Vista scoring system I could purchase two identical Lenovo machines and install the exact same software and they would end up with completely different scores. This is my reason for never, ever, ever relying on it. Its useless and I would like to get my hands on the developer of it. :p

Also, what program are you using to try and view this high definition content? I would suggest trying several to see if it is just a software incompatibility with the particular Quadro graphics card you have.

i think the laptop is completely capable of these but is just having some trouble playing them correctly. as stated above start with the latest video driver. i would then recommend changing your player. use a free open source style player such as VLC Media Player or Coremedia player. Also install the latest version of FFDShow to ensure you have the proper codec's. Im sure you understand that the video setup on these machines is not really setup for gaming/video/Hi-Def but you should still be able to play mostly any movie you want.

Side Note: without hi-def outputs or hi-def screens, what would the purpose of a bluray drive be other than to burn large amounts of data?

I use Media Player Classic that comes with K-lite codec pack, and all the codecs included with it. It does work correctly with my desktop pc with a 7900GTX coupled with a 245B doing 1920x1200. I will try VLC later on.

Also the problem with 2D performance doesn't stop at videos. The eye candy of windows vista also drops frames. One example is the minimize maximize animation. It clearly drags it self and is not fluid like on my desktop or on dozens of other systems far inferior to mine! Also if i drag a window that occupies around 80% of the screen, it does lag behind. It's just not fluid. Now i have disabled most of these effects, cause their were annoying me quite a bit.

I'm quite sure that this is a software problem, although i don't have the means to prove it's not hardware related. I've run PC-Doctor and it says everything is alright, for what is worth.

Can someone with a NVS140M try to play a 1080p content on their laptop and tell me what happened so that i can be sure i'm not going crazy, please! :p

    Thanks!
