I was just wondering whether the downgrade would only work with the supplied thinkpad or will it work with any machine?

It may work on another machine, but legally, it's probably tied to the machine it was intended to be used on.

the recovery media is activated automatically with the Volume License Key, but if there is significant hardware change then the os would require to reactivate with new serial number.

But legally you should only use the cd on the machine with the right serial number.
