Hello,
i'm sure, there are same ppl like me, who need to setup MS Windows x64 on his/her R61/T61 notebook. I have the 64 bit XP already working, so i'll post what and how i achieved so far.
The reasons for setting up 64 bit XP are mostly similar (in my case):
1. i'm professional working with graphics (cad/cam) applications
2. i need all the cpu / graphic performance i can get for my app and not for system (Vista)
3. i need things simple, dont have time to play with nice OS features
4. etc etc
Please help yourself same as help me and others with ideas and links to drivers...good luck![]()

Edited:
AHCI compatibility mode (thanks to rogerspass)
If you want to use AHCI (and not the compatibility mode) you need to give it some prep before you start the installation itself.
- download the intel matrix storage driver from intel website here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101&lang=eng
- then extract the necessary driver
you downloaded the iata78_enu.exe file and saved it onto your hdd -> start the command line (start-run-cmd), navigate to the location where file is saved (e.g. c:\install)
- run command iata78_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\
- it will create 2 folders in your root dir (c:\) named Driver and Driver64 - there you have the inf files ... the Driver64 is the folder of interest
- then (as rogespass wrote) he used nLite to integrate the sata driver contained in "Driver64" into his windows xp x64 installation media, thus the installation process can detect the sata hard drive automatically
( my comment: i think another way -not tried though it myself- is to have USB A-drive and place this folder into the floppy and then during installation press F6 and navigate the install to the attached USB A-drive floppy)
- then he (after the os installation, first of all) installed intel chipset driver, then matrix storage driver again (i.e. iata78_enu.exe) to solve some unknow device problem
- then you continue with the rest (nic or wifi to get it online) and the rest in this guide
- good luck![]()
I edited beginning of this thread because i find it more convenient this way (not to have finished install and then find out you got to start it all over because of AHCI)
finished EDIT
*********************
So my R61 XP x64 went like this:
1. first thing is always NIC (network interface card)
Intel® 82566 Gigabit Ethernet PHY
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2775&lang=eng
2. vga driver to have convenient "view"
ForceWare X 174.31 for Windows XP 64bit
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=17741
3. then i ran complete Windows update from internet and downloaded everything i could (chipset drivers doesnt wanted to install without this update)
4. chipset drivers installation:
Intel® Chipset Software Installation Utility
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=816
5. next i grabbed is wifi:
Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2753
So ladies and gents, here i am, thats all. Now i look for the audio driver and rest. But i already can work on it and it really pays off.
I reached performance in Catia V5 - (CAD sw) like some of our HP 8200 workstations and even bested them! cool.
I hope this can help out and if some others would look for drivers, we might end up pretty satisfied.
My general idea of looking is to look notebooks with similar configs on Asus, Dell (they do provide some XP x64 drivers) and also chip makers.

oh, forgot to add my notebook type - so:
IBM-Lenovo R61, type: 8918-DEG -
Still noone interested or trying 64bit XP? I'm on bussiness trip in India, but i'll get back to it at the end of april!
-
There are not many people in your situation that will install 64bit XP they rather have 64bit Vista
-
Part II
Ok guys, i'm back, so naturally i started to look farther - so next was the:
6. audio driver
I've spent couple of hours of looking on the net for Soundmax x64 driver, found some on Dell and Asus www pages, but none worked. Finally i read some old post about someone trying Vista drivers, so i gave it try too.
downloaded the Vista driver for my notebook from lenovo pages:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67821
After download the .exe pack file, i ran it and unpacked it in one my folders. Then i went to that folder and ran setup.exe, it said it doesnt support this system. So i went to manual updating of the driver.
In DEVICE MANAGER i choose to update driver of the audio and went to the folder where i originally unpacked the files.
In my case: C:\install\vista64\AMD64\VISTA
After few "digestive" sounds of my HDD (probably not fond of Vista stuff) ...
Voila! here is the sound in Windows XP x64! -
Part III.
Ok, i'm quite excited about those Vistas thingies drivers
7. hda modem
i downloaded from lenovo for Vista64 here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-61454
.... again i ran the dowloaded .exe file and unpacked
I ran main setup.exe again it ended with some crap exception, so i went to the subfolder:
C:\install\vista64\HDAMODEM\WINVISTA64
and ran setup64.exe - it went smoothly through, so next driver working in XP x64! -
Part IV.
Oki Vista driver adventure continues with the fingerprint:
8. fingerprint software and driver:
obtained from lenovo pages as normal download for Vista 64 for my ntb type here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-66948
I downloades exe file, ran it and withou any further addo, it installed smoothly, no problem, no unpacking, just tired of double-clickin' -
another Vista 64:
9. thinkpad hotkey features
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68000
just download and run -> done -
10. ThinkVantage Active Protection System for Windows Vista 64-bit
(work again on XP x64)
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-67046
again download, install no problems .. -
11. Card reader driver (Ricoh 4-in-1) from Vista 64 again for XP x64
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-68053
download & run again -
I applaud your effort to help others with 64 bit driver locations.
Reps! -
but I cant install hotkey, the file are installed but no on screen display like soundbar is visable... an Ive got 2 more unknown devices...
Biometric... I think its the fingerprint reader, im never using this thing and an unkown device, location on Intel(R) ICH8M-E LPC Interface Controller - 2811...
therefor i also tried to install the driver of readyboost and the funny thing is that xp show it right at the menu choose driver, but after install there is an scsi device with an yellow fault... -
Thanks! This is very helpful for me.
What drivers are still missing? Hotkeys and OSD's as stated above? -
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=1068&DwnldID=8719&lang=eng
Even though it says it's for another controller, the driver looks like the exact same one to me. -

Hi guys,
i'm glad that some of you might find this usefull.
Btw i tried the NIC download link now and it is working for me - perhaps some temporary problem.
Right now i'm left with 2 unknown devices and 3 unknown base system devices.
For sure one of the unknown devices is Atmel TPM - i found so far only 32 bit version on lenovo site.
Other things i dont know yet, but i suspect some bluetooth problem - since i managed to install bluetooth driver, so that the device has gone from unknown family devices, but now i cant find it anywhere else.
Will do some googlin and yahhoouin
Ok guys, i need to hunt down the Atmel TPM (trusted platform module) driver. Problem is as follows: it's possible to install only 32 bit version. Lenovo as explanation says on their www Atmel TPM download page this:
"Notes:
*1: Supports Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 only.
*2: For Windows Vista, the TPM device driver is included in Windows Vista. No update is needed from this driver package.
*3: Supports Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit only"
I think this means that Vista 64 bit has this driver included as OS. Can someone confirm this? If i try to install the 32 bit version it says its missing 2 particular files during the install process:
atmeltpm64.sys
tpmddl64.dll
Can someone here search his HDD for this 2 files if he has Vista 64 bit? Thanks a lot! -
Ok, this time be ready for some work, it will take some effort co accomplish our next task:
12. Atmel TPM (trusted platform module) driver installation for XP x64 mini-howto
prerequisite:
Identify which of the unknown devices you'll work with:
Have a look in Device manager and right click on the unknown device -> properties -> details -> look for the "ACPI\ATM1200...." identifier (go though the unknown devices until you find the right one). This is it. That we're gonna work upon.
This was a bit trickier than usual "download setup and run". Lenovo didnt include the 64bit ".sys" and ".dll" files into the setup file they supply.
As I wrote in my last post, i missed 2 particular files. So tried to do a bit hunting again ....
firstly:
go to the Atmel corp. www and download trusted platform module driver from them here
http://www.atmel.com/forms/software_download.asp?fn=dl_Atmel TPM Driver.zip
I'll have to fill in some crap info in the form for the download to start ...
You save file "Atmel TPM Driver.zip" and then you unzip it => voila you get the "Atmel TPM Driver.msi" file, which you run in order to install driver.
secondly:
After running that ".msi" file, it again! ended with some error. I thought ***** ...
I looked up and googled for some tool to be able to extract manually ".msi" files ...
found here nice one! :
http://blogs.pingpoet.com/overflow/archive/2005/06/02/2449.aspx
Dowload that tool, unzip it somewhere and follow the steps described on above web page to extract the ".msi" installer.
e.g. I extracted it like that (you sure probably have other dir names):
C:\LessMSIerables>lessmsi.exe -x "c:\bordylek\Atmel TPM Driver.msi" c:\bordylek\atmel.tpm.msi.file_unpacked
In my directory ("atmel.tpm.msi.file_unpacked\SourceDir\temp") i FINALLY FOUND the two missing files:
atmeltpm64.sys and tpmddl64.dll
thirdly:
last things last - usual stuff -> manually update the driver for "unknown device" ... firstly i directed it to folder where i saved the atmel tpm from lenovo and when it complained about those above mentioned files, i redirected to the folder with extracted ".msi" installer...
uff this was longer, but i had to write it down before i forgot everything!
Hope it works for you too! -
I installed the latest 174 video card driver from laptop2go and now my screen is flickering a lot. Do I have to install some kind of monitor driver? I can't find it anywhere.
-
Hi Allan, what kind of notebook/vga you have? I looked at your above posts but cant see it?
If i presume the driver is ok, sometimes it flickers if there is set up wrong refresh rate for the computer screen. Should be 60Hz - check it in the display properties. -
Sorry, I have a T61 14". The video card is the Quadro 140M. I'm about to install a 167 driver and see if that fixes the flickering.
edit: Oh, and how about the Lenovo power management program?
edit2: the 167 series seems to have fixed it. -
Hm, i checked the driver 174 again, to make sure and it says the driver support the quadro nvs 140m. I have the same vga liky you do and its working perfectly.
As for display properties on my ntb. i use plug and play monitor, 60Hz refresh rate. So i dont think you need some special monitor driver...
Gratz
btw i have last 4 unrecognized devices - 3 x Base system device and 1 x unknown device. As for the power management - i haven't looked after it yet. So much googlin and yoahohaouing that i start to be tired.
-
after the installtion i think im gonna back to vista 64, some of my programms wont install at xp 64 so im in need to install vista back, thank god i did a acronis image -
13. Power Management Driver - as Allan asked:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-4GXPEG.html
Just download and install. No problems here. That was my last "unknown device", now only left the 3x Base system device =>
Rionale: Thanks a bunch for hint and help, will try it right away.
14. Ok as Rionale said the "Base system devices" were:
- Ricoh Memory Stick controller
- Ricoh SD/MMC Host controller
- Ricoh xD-Picture Card controller
again I had to manually update driver and point to the corresponding folders where i originally unpacked the driver for Ricoh 4x1 (in step 11):
\4IN1\xDx64
\4IN1\SDMMCx64
\4IN1\MSx64
I thought i had already installed those, since i installed 4x1 card reader before (in step 11 i think) but i just ran setup.exe and havent been trying to manually update anything, since the setup completed without any complaining.
Thanks for pointing this out Rionale.
This was last drivers needed. All is set and NO SINGLE YELLOW SIGN IN DEVICE MANAGER!!).
I think i'll call it good job well done as far as we consider drivers!
Of course there is some other things - like SW for Bluetooth, also hotkeys don't display on computer screen (even though they work) etc. But major work done!
Now i'll be after Linux CentOS 64 bit installation as second OS on my notebook, since i need to prepare for some RedHat courses and exams.
Thank You guys for help and hopefully this will help others too!.
-
Disadvantage of nvidia 167 drivers -- the brightness changing hotkeys don't do anything anymore.

Hi again,
i started to play with the utilities again
.
The link in lenovo for utilities for Vista:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/s...ind=0&operatingsystemind=343518&validate=true
I installed:
1. ultranav utility
2. hotkey utility again + Bluetooth:
i looked through the unpacked folder structure of hotkeys and in the
\vista\HOTKEY\OSD\F5\TpFnF5.exe -> i ran this exe file, it started utility, which turned my so far missing Bluetooth on, then it asked if i want to download Bluetooth driver form Microsof -> yes -> voila i have Bluetooth!
!! i must add that before playing with this i tried to install the bluetooth for vista from lenovo pages ... not possible, installer do not run. So i ran only DPInst.exe in the
\bluetooth\Win64\brcm folder - it installed just the broadcom driver, nothing else.
After the installing some stuff from MS site (automatic) i see now in the
Control Panel the "Bluetooth Device" - i opened it and in options i checked "show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area"
Now i see the Bluetooth icon in the System tray, which is perfect.
Widcomm Bluetooth Software which comes packed together with the Bluetooth driver (in the lenovo installer) is not needed. I also checked the Broadcomm website here:
http://www.broadcom.com/products/bluetooth_update.php
to make sure, but their installer which is possible to dowload is web based and it also complain about wrong OS.
I also found this link for download - its patched to use even with the 64 (as they claim):
http://files.filefront.com/WidcommBluetoothSoftware/;5234223;/fileinfo.html
It is Widcomm.Bluetooth.Software.Drivers.5.1.0.2800.Incl .License.Patcher_x32_x64.by.Boto - i havent tried it yet though..

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14439&st=0&p=54044&#entry54044 -
However, I think I'm going to give up on 64-bit XP and dual boot 64-bit vista (and turn all the fancy crap off) and ubuntu. -
Glad it worked, can you paste here the path where you filled this key in the registry?
Thanks a lot ...
Btw i'f you'll be after 64 bit Vista, could you post here then, if your Hotkey driver work correctly?
I'm searching on it right now and i see quite bunch of ppl have same problems with it on the 64 bit Vista like i (we) do on the 64 bit XP...
Well i'm fan of Debian personally - i used on my old laptop Debian testin 64bit with win. xp in dual boot.
Now i'm gonna go after CentOS 5.1. I need to get better grip of rpm based distro, since in june i'll attend RedHat administration course and certification and its not easy, ehm.
-
Nice thread, just what I need thanks!
I have 3 issues though:
1. usb not working. I have 7 "usb root hub"s in device manager, all with yellow mark. I've installed all the chipset inf's, but something must be wrong.
2. processor also has yellow mark in device manager. I have the T8300 which is not officially supported by XP, so i assume thats the reason.
3. Can you get Access Connections to work? I can't...
Hope somebody can help.
thanks -
Hm, that's interesting.
- what model do you have?
- i assume you ran all MS updates from web?
e.g. i've had my usb working immediately after OS installation. I remember i've been copying my network card driver through USB stick on my ntb. so i could get it online and run updates etc... -
-
But now another problem: atheros wireless seems to be working (as reported by windows) but the list of wireless networks is empty. Antenna is on of course. Tried both the vista64 driver from lenovo and atheros xp x64 driver...
Does your T8100 show up in device manager? -
Krejniuk, i'm sory i dont have the aetheros chip, my type uses regular chip from Intel. Btw what type of lenovo ntb you have?
Not much to do.
I'd try to uninstall it and then unpacke somewhere the driver from Aetheros and manually update the driver then.
Or ask directly the Aetheros company about those drivers ... sory i cant help you more .... -
Hi, I have XP 32-bit and I'm considering going to 64-bit for MAX and CAD and full 4GB of memory ... is Acces Connections and all wifi driver functions working (wifi-led, fn-f5 menu) when using Intel driver?
Have you (or anybody) tried RightMARK CPU Clock utility for undervolting in xp64? I've tried it in Vista 64, but they have the digital signature check so it doesn't work without turning the checking off at every boot.
Or generally is there so strict signature checking as in Vista 64? Because that's the main reason why I don't like it right now. -
Hi,
i dont use access conn. yet my wi-fi and bluetooth is working with no problems. Generally, i try to keep my system without unnecessary lenovo utils, i need slim, fast, bare system. Otherwise, Wifi led working, fn+f5 i dont know, havent tried yet. I dont use my ntb for presentations, more like workstation (have dock station in work).
I'm sory, i dont know the SW you mention, the RightMark, so i guess, its up to you to try and refer :.)).
As for the signatures, the XP x64 have same pattern like 32 bit XP - so its ok.
Be ready, it's kinda "do it yourself" since XP x64 are not officially supported. (but the better feeling if you got it working ). When i installed windows this time, it was almost same adventure like with new linux distro, hehe. :..)) -
Don't worry I know what is it to walk hidden pathes and I like it. Right now for example I have two working internal wifi-cards in my laptop
OK, I think I'll give it a try when I have time for it. I use Lenovo utils for their convenience (though I hate utils of other brands), so I will try to make them work and post my notes if succesful. -
Yes, some utilis are good. What bothers me most atm is the hotkeys - they install ok, no complains, but dont work really, or work weird.
I dont have time for playing with windows atm, since i need linux more in work, but i'll get back to it. Some ppl on 64bit vista refer same problem. So its not only XP x64 specific. We'll see ...
anyway, gl&hf)
-
My display flickers too, when I use version 175.63 of drivers :/
It's hardly noticable but sometimes when you move eyes or when there is brightness fade, you can see it.
I'll try older version too... -
-
I tried 167.58 and brightness control worked (it didn't with 17x), but it still flickers :-/ I don't time for it right now
-
Hi. I follow the post to install xp 64 bit on my T61 7664-16U, every thing went quite well except one unknown device "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller."
Does anyone know how to get it work?
By the way, I presume everyone has turned the SATA controller mode in bios from AHCI to "compatibility" else windows cannot find the hard drive. Am I correct?
Another question is. How to turn the SATA mode back to AHCI after install os. I tried to follow the method in xp (not 64bit). It said we can install intel matrix storage, then change to AHCI mode in bios. Reboot, and the os can detect the sata controller automatically. However, when I download the intel matrix storage driver from intel websites,
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101&lang=eng
and choose x64, which leaded to this driver, iata78_enu.exe.
However, I could not install it. Got an error message like this.
"This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software. Setup will exit"
Does anyone encounter this too? Or I don't have to turn it back to AHCI, just keep the compatibility mode. Will it slightly low down the hard drive performance?
Thanks. -
Hi Rogerpass,
unknown device:
if you go to device manager -> properties of unknow device, then have look in the details tab -> device instance id
there you see the value of the device inst. id - post it here, or try some search engine (google) and you'll find for sure what that unknonw thingie is
as for the ahci / compatibility mode:
i stay in compatibility mode all the time, because i also use linux in dual boot and because i use CentOS (RHEL) 5.1 (work reasons) i use older kernel and had problems with it under linux
next thing is (i tried to search a bit) if the AHCI mode is really such and advancement over compatibility mod ... i found quite a bunch of discussion on that and generally speaking lot of ppl were sayin that they didnt notice any difference, some says they got it better even with compatibility mode, some says its better AHCI, well.... so i dont bother with it right now and wait for Red Hat (rhel) 5.2 with new kernel and then i might give it a shot
downloaded driver:
have you tried to extract that downloaded .exe file to some folder and than update it manually ? since i got couple of times this warning, but after extraction and manual update it worked ok ...
howto extract:
in the command prompt (start -> run), browse to the folder where you saved that stubborn .exe file (eg. cd c:\install\ahci) and then run this:
iata78_enu.exe -a -a -pc:\
It will create 2 folders in your root dir (c:\) named Driver and Driver64 - there you have the inf files ... then try the various guides on changing the comp. mode to AHCI again
btw i tried to search just this forum on this matter (AHCI vs. Compatibility mode) and got numerous threads in response :.)
gl&hf -
Hello.
First - HELIAKON thanks a lot for this thread. It helped me a lot.
Secound - Regarding AHCI:
Downoad http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=migr-62909 . This is the driver! Instal it manually. It is IDE controler. Instal driver ->>> instal from specific location -->>> Don`t search. I will choose the driver. -->>> have the disc --->>> go to the place You extract the driver --->>>choose the iaahci --->>> now choose the correct controller (mine was 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller). Install it even if the system will tell You that it is not recommended!!!
Now You are able to install iata78_enu_200364.
Restart system and check if every think is fine...
Go to bios and change compatibilly mode to AHCI.
Should be fine...... -
Now my problem.....
I have problem with AUDIO.
Every restart, just when I an comming to win I get the massage from Smax4PNP "This version of AudioESP is not intended for this Operating System"...
Any idea what to do??... -
Hi. helikaon,
I finally solve this unknow device mark by install power management driver, http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4gxpeg
Another input is, I installed the Nvidia NVS140M driver from windows update, not the driver link you posted. Besides, does your hotkey works well?
I installed the hotkey driver, but the Fn+F2, F3, F5, F7, F8, F9, Home (LCD increse), End (LCd decrease) didn't work. The only work is Fn+F4 and Fn+F12.
Anyway, my T61 works well under XP X64 now. Thanks. -
I also got this problem, no idea what to do. Even though, the audio works well at least I can listen mp3, watch video.
Cheers~ -
Hi roger and fisherman,
thanks and thanks for additional info, its cool to see other ppl help to fill blind spots in this puzzle :.)
As for the mysterious Smax4PNP. I did some search (clever daddy google) and I found, that normally the smax4pnp.exe process puts an icon in the system tray, which gives you quick access to some of the features of the SoundMax software that was installed with your soundcard drivers. If you do not use the system tray icon it is safe to stop this process. Basically its required if you have custom settings for your sound, such as effects and environments.
Apparently, my system tray icon wasnt working, so i went:
Start > Run > msconfig, then the "startup" tab. Uncheck the box beside the smax4pnp listed there, exit, and restart the computer...
As for the hotkeys - i really bothers me too, i havent solved this problem yet, so unfortunatelly no help so far. I didnt have much time lately to go hunt down some information on this, but i'll get to it soon. -
Ok
Fn+F7 - it started to work (or at least to do something) after i installed the 3.06 Presentation Director
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67364
Well, i dont have the dataprojector to try it, but at least the Fn+F7 is not "dead" and catches if i press it.
This is terrible, since the hotkey problem is quite common and as i read couple of threads, the hotkey drv. is dependant on other SW too.
e.g. this Fn+F7 thingie is reportedly in some way dependant on the
- Presentation Director
- Hotkey features
- Onscreen Display
- Full Screen Magnifier
Same for Fn+F5 - dependant on the access connections sw
i installed the 4.52 version for xp/2000 since couldnt vista (os not supported)
It installed OK but doesnt wanna run after reboot, so no advancement here, grrr -
Hi. I finally decide to re-install the OS again, this time I turned on the SATA AHCI mode in bios. Moreover, I used nLite to integrate the sata driver which contained in "Driver64" directoriy extracted from iata78_enu.exe, as mentioned in upper post. Thus the installation process can detect the sata hard drive automatically, and went through completely. After the os installation, first of all, I installed intel chipset driver, then matrix storage driver (i.e. iata78_enu.exe) again to solved some unknow device. Third, the intel 4965agn wireless card and thus I can went to Windows update. Also follow others driver installation process as posted above. Everything, going well except the some hotkey function.
I hope this will helps someone who want to turn on the ahci mode in the initial installation process. Good luck.
Windows XP x64 on R61 and T61 - join forces here to find drivers!
