Hey guys--I've been posting a lot of questions with my new x61 lately and I thank everyone for their help. I have yet another one for you guys: I just installed the first wave of windows updates and it increased my boot time by at least 20 seconds. Anyone know why that is and if that can be avoided?

are you using windows XP or Vista?
well, in anycase, i think you can defragment and clean your registry to alleviate the problem. i'm not sure if it will get you 10 seconds of your time back, but it will certainly improve it, if you haven't defragment and clean your registry for a while. -
thx for th tips so far but I just freshly installed WinXP and as I was downloading all the updates my boot time increased :-/. Particularly at the "welcome" screen.

I just finished installing all the updates and it turns out to about 20 second increase in boot time
. I don't see how windows update could do this? It seems wierd to me. My desktop is running an AMD 3200+ with 2gb memory and it loads faster than my laptop which is running a 2.0 ghz core 2 duo w/ 2gb mem. Why do you tink that is? Maybe something's wrong?

I doubt theres really anything wrong, xp has been known to have slower boot times after installing updates. Its probably from the 100 or so security updates that need to be installed.
Also your hard drive might be slower then the one on your desktop. You can also try running Tweakxp to optimize it, along with the stuff hehe said. -
it might just be the first time you reboot. i know that a lot of updates install upon reboot.
does it still boot up slowly?
Windows update increased my boot time by 10+ seconds?
