Oh man; network issues are my weak spot and they drive me crazy; just the lingo makes my blood curdle. DHCP, Static, Dynamic, #@$#$@.

I have a wireless printer connected to our iMac. The printer is the Brother HL 5370 DW. Now, all I want to do is be able to use that printer wirelessly with my T400/XP/SP3 -- but I have no frigging idea how to do it, and all the intuitive ways -- clicking on add printer, browse for printer -- it's just not showing the printer as an option, I have no idea what the "IP address" for my printer is and I'm about to shoot this puppy here.

Pleeeeeeeeeease, somebody, help me out of this misery!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just want to be able to print wirelessly to this already existing wireless printer.

did you install the drivers for the printer?
Did you read the section titled "Wireless configuration for Windows using the Brother automatic installer application" page 29 of the manual titled "Network User's Guide" for the Brother HL-5370DW?

Wait, the Brother printer is connected to your iMac? Via USB I'm guessing?
Do you own a router? You should be connecting the printer to the router via ethernet or wireless and then printing to it from your computers via network connection (either wireless or ethernet) to the router.

Thank gmoney -- indeed, the printer is connected to the iMac via wireless router -- the Apple Express. And my T400 is connected wirelessly through the same wireless router. And the printer is functioning wirelessly with the iMac, but I don't see it on my Lenovo when I attempt to add printer.

I have the exact same printer—works flawlessly, wirelessly. If I recall correctly, Windows 7 just detected it and offered to install the drivers. Since you are using a legacy operating system/Windows XP, you’ll likely have to download and install the drivers manually from Brother (and provide the IP address of your printer).

Please know this really has nothing to do with your ThinkPad/Lenovo/IBM.

That's the first good case I've heard for upgrading to Windows 7. Mostly I've heard, "If you don't have to upgrade, stick with XP." But I'm ready for a new OS. So I guess I'll go for it. I notice, Blink, we've got identical machines (though you're packin' 4 gigs to my 2). Are you happy you went with the 64bit and would you suggest I do the same? Or would you think I'd be better with the 32bit version of 7?

so the printer is connected to your Airport Express? By ethernet? Or USB? If you have it connected by ethernet, then you should be able to download the Brother drivers and software suite and install it to your computer and only need to know the IP address. If you connected it to the USB port then I believe it uses Bonjour, Apple's networking protocol which isn't built into Windows. You would need to install Bonjour and follow Apple's instructions for installing a printer.

I strongly disagree with this. By today’s standards, Windows XP in an insecure ancient dinosaur. The same people who are telling you to stick with Windows XP, will probably tell you they still run Windows 98 because of how fast everything is/how few resources it uses.

If you are planning to upgrade to 4GB of RAM soon, go x64. Otherwise, on 2GB RAM, stay with x86—there is no significant reason to run x64 on 2GB of RAM (and it’ll actually use more RAM than its x86 counterpart.)
