    Am I missing something, but it appears that my wireless radio is always off when I shutdown my laptop and start it back up. I can always turn it on using the FN+F5 key, but that's annoying.

    And yes, the little hardware switch is always on.

    Check in the BIOS. There may be an option there. My (non-Lenovo) notebook has three options for the wireless setting when starting / resuming: Always off, always on, and use last setting.
