A while ago, I cured a particular wireless disconnection problem. At the time I discovered it, I wasn't sure if it was the fix or not so I didn't bother to remember what the fix was.

    Precise Problem Statement:

Wireless Card Powers down after about five minutes when disconnected from an AP.

    Specific Fix:

    Power Manager:

Advanced Settings | PCI Express Link State Power Management

    AC Power : OFF
Battery: OFF if you want the same behavior.

This may not be the only fix required, I am just saying that this was the hidden item that I searched for, for a long, long time.

It is still recommended that you set all the traditional settings in the Advanced Vista Power management plans. Also on your wireless adapter properties sheet in device manager, be sure to clear power management for that card in both the battery and AC power plans.
