    hey everyone,

I have the normal wireless on the SL500 which is the ThinkPad 11b/g III Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe

and it's staying stuck on identifying sometimes in my house and sometimes in school.

A heads up first. please don't tell me to fix my wireless at home it's working fine, we have 2 other laptops connected to it and this desktop pc that is wired to it. it has nothing to do with that since also in college it's doing this.

It used to work fine. then at one point it stopped a week ago, and it tells me excellent signal but it stays on identifying and then goes to unidentified.

I have read a bit about this problem from past threads, did a few "fixes" yet I'm not sure which ipv6 the threads were talking about since there are many so I fixed it a week ago with going in device manager and network adapter and changing 2 settings inside the realtek driver which are the Large Send Offload (ipv4) and Large Send Offload (ipv6)

i put enabled for Large Send Offload (ipv4) and disabled for the Large Send Offload (ipv6)

then i opened the wireless place in the bottom corner of the computer and there's a tape on the antennas (there's no card since I have the normal wireless) and the tape was not placed well so I placed it back and turned on laptop and it worked.

today, same problem again it's on identifying and etc... i open the bottom, i see the tape removed on one side, i remove the tape and put another one of my own on the black part and the problem persists! I don't know why. I put back the normal settings again, doesn't work, etc.. etc.. still doesn't work. restarted plenty of times, shutted down plenty of times, doesn't work..

I'm sure someone knows a fix. maybe in the network adapter properties somewhere, disabling or enabling something ? I'm not sure but any help is appreciated :)

    thanks everyone

Just cause your other laptops work don't mean there's not a problem with your network. Did you look at upgrading the firmware on your router?

then I'll have to upgrade the firmware of the school's network also correct?

Zaz, it also doesn't work in school at the same time as home, either the wireless I have (the most basic one) is horrible, and I need to upgrade to the intel ones.
or there is a setting to change, I'm hoping someone here knows a solution :) maybe for the settings in device manager, there's plenty of them and I don't want to change unless someone tells me I should.

I used to work at a tech desk at a university library, and we had students with similar problems. Are you running Vista? It turns out that Vista requires you to modify your connection settings manually if you want to connect to a network that isn't broadcasting properly, a problem that affected all of our wireless systems.

    Try this:

Open your 'network and sharing center', click on 'manage wireless networks', right click on your network and then select 'connect even if the network isn't broadcasting.'

That usually worked, but sometimes we had to delete the existing connection and create it manually (again, selecting 'connect even if the network isn't broadcasting).

There seem to be many situations where the 'identifying' problem occurs, so this might not be the right solution. Hope it helps!

Edit: You could also just be getting assigned bad IP addresses, seeing as this problem happens intermittantly. Have you tried releasing and renewing your IP address?

i have the same problem. it just started recently after months of working perfectly.

my problem is that i'm never able to connect after i boot my laptop. it stays at identifying and the method ive found that works most often, but not always, is disconnecting and reconnecting to the network.

ive updated to a new wireless driver and the problem persists. in fact, the reason i upgraded my driver was because there was a problem.

i have no problem connecting at school, just here at home, where we have 4 other computers that dont have a problem connecting.

i dont understand why this began and whether it was caused by a thinkpad system update or a windows update, but its getting very annoying troubleshooting everytime i boot my laptop or have it resume from sleep.

i'm gonna try and use I5aacs solution and see if that helps.

Thanks i5aac a lot :). However I can't try it now since my conx started working last night after a long shut down lol. strange!
but I did put your setting and I'll wait to see if it breaks again :) thanks a lot

but we'll see if it will work!
Max, I have just seen this post in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=297839

I'll be trying the last few solutions since I don't have Intel 5300.

I also suggest putting in the power options of vista the wireless connection to "maximum performance" for both battery and plugged in.
