So far I've seen a ton of complaints about the T400, including long shipping delays and the fact that tech support doesn't seem to be familiar with the new machines (yet) - I understand that only those with problems come to forums to post, people w/o issues do not etc. etc.. However, I've been lurking around here for years and I've never seen Thinkpad satisfaction so much in the toilet as it has been with the new T400s (and T500s I guess?)
Anyways, do you guys suggest that one just get a T61p instead? Is the T400 really THAT much better?

Being someone with a brick of a T400...and VERY angry at Lenovo. I'd say the odds are in your favor that your T400 would operate just fine. And since you'd just be getting a T61 which is a Lenvo....you do me no good at dissuading you from buying LENOVO.
Being said, though, the T400 is new, they're not up to speed on it. With new platforms, it should probably be expected to have hicups, it just sucks when YOU'RE the person with the hicup. I'm sure whatever issues those of us face, will eventually be cleared up. More likely sooner rather than later. Afterall, Thinkpads have historically been about the best laptops one could get, and I'm quite certain Lenovo will want to keep that image/reputation as much as possible.
I think the T400 has potential to be much better, but if you're not tricking it out with the 2.8, and the 256 meg dedicated graphics, you'd probably be fine with T61. However, if you want the smaller 14" monitor, I don't believe it's offered in a T61 anymore (I could be wrong here) -

Don't forget the battery life. Being able to work at a coffee shop or on a cross country flight without worrying about plugging in invaluable.

Re: t61...I actually PREFER the 15.1" (14" would have been fine too though)...so I guess the T61 fits me in that respect. -
Okay, I dont have mine yet but from what I've read most of these issues are software issues. Someone was actually blaming "memory leaks" on Lenovo. Oh come on! If someones to be blamed, its Microsoft for their stupid software. I'll be wiping it clean and installing Linux

it's best to just wipe and not rely on RECOVERY at all -
I heard all DD3 modules have holes in them for ventilation, and if you have too many windows open the 0s and 1s in RAM can spill all over the motherboard
. That's why they put all those holes behind the keyboard in the T400.

It's true. You can always steal some data from a user with DDR3 memory by discreetly placing a tin pan somewhere below his laptop and waiting for his memory to leak. But binary data has a short half-life when it's outside of memory, so you don't have long before it decays into pure null pointers.

This sentence covers the "too short message". -
It depends if you want a LED display or the old CCFL ones. I got one of the last 4:3 Thinkpad T61 and I'm pleased with it, in some aspects it beats my old classic IBM Thinkpad T42p. If you have the budget go and get the T400. My T61 have some flexing too above the ExpressCard slot but is much minor than on the T400. The left bezel next to the FN key is also loose as if my Thinkpad were just a toy.
If you don't like the WS aspect on new Thinkpads get a T61 XGA or SXGA+, in the contrary buy the T400. -
With all the T400 issues, should I just get a T61p?
