Just took apart my entire x220 to apply new thermal paste and replace my centrino 1000 wireless card with an intel centrino ultimate 6300 spare wireless card that i had.

Little did i know that Lenovo won't allow a wireless card to be installed. i get a
unauthorized network card error upon bootup and i can't continue :(

is there an easy way to work around this issue?

Either buy a Lenovo branded one or do the BIOS hack.
