Well I just found out that I am getting the 15.4" Samsung WSXGA+ TFT screen and have found alot of bad things about it on these forums. Does anyone have this screen? And what do they think of it?

They say good and bad about both screens. No need to get uptight until you see it.

i have a 15.4" Samsung WSXGA+, generally i'm satisfied with it. except that when i don't use full/almost full brightness right side has some shadows noticeable on white/ light gray backgrounds. It needs some time to warm then its ok :)

may be it is a warranty issue...

I have the samsung and just love it. It is way better than my old T42 and nice than the HP I had at school. Bright, precise. I can't see the pixel on the screen!

Don't confuse Dell forums with Lenovo. :p It seems everytime I go there someone is pulling their hair out trying to swap their grainy Samsung for an LG.

Enter your system information (type and serial number) here and Google the FRU for the screen.

I tried that for my T61. The screen FRU came up 42T0323 and all the googling in the world only gave me "IBM" or "Lenovo" screen. No mention of Samsung, LG/Phillips...so, does IBM make their own screens?

So, it's a Samsung. I don't really have any opinions one way or the other seeing as how it's the first notebook screen I've ever stared at. I wonder if the LG screens have such a narrow viewing angle. Mine dies off quickly whichever direction I go from dead on.

I had a Samsung WSXGA+ screen before; it was quite lovely. Don't worry until you see it :) May require some color tweaking in the Nvidia control panel, but once properly adjusted it's very nice.

    Hello,

my T61 has a 15,4" WSXGA+ and it is horrible. The graininess of the display really bothers me. Now I'm flicking through several threads to find out if a replacement is possible. I worked with a T42 and a T60, but none of the both displays had such a bad quality as the Samsung does. :(
I do not want to worry you, but some are sensitive to graininess and some are not... From the first second upon entering windows I knew that something was wrong with this display. I thought I would get used to it, but it seems I won't.

Hmm.. does this mean that Lenovo's situation is comparable to the Dell m1530's?
I have seen the dell samsung WSXGA+ in person and it was terrible.. Is that what the T61 WSXGA+ Samsung screens look like?

Well I just got my T61p today and it has the Samsung screen. It is beautiful the colors are awsome and the screen is very bright I have it down 4 clicks. There is slight backlite bleeding but I can't see it unless the screen is completly black and I am in a dark enviroment. The vertical and horizontal viewing angles are quite good contrary to most reviews. I LOVE this thing solid as a rock much more screen than I expected but the laptop isn't too heavy.

    Enjoy your new thinkpad. :)

Is there anyone who can post side-by-side pics?

Glad it was much ado about nothing. :)

Here is a comparison performed by members of this forum. In a nutshell, the differences are negligible once both displays are calibrated.

    Something like this:

It could bleed from any sides not just the top as depicted. It usually bleeds from the bottom.

Interesting thread on the display panels.

Mine turns out to be an AU Optronics. While I haven't heard the best things about their panels used in other vendors' notebooks, mine is very uniform, brightness is great, with no noticeable backlight bleed or stuck pixels. Maybe I just got a good one.

You cannot say that Samsung screens are the best in the series, because there are very drastic and noticeable differences between 14,4" and 15,4 screens etc.

What are the drastic and noticeable differences between 14.1" Widescreen WXGA+ and 15.4" Widescreen WXGA+ Samsung panels?

A friend got a 14.1" Widescreen WXGA+ Samsung panel and really likes it.

rickydd said the Samsung in the T series are the best. But there are standard screen panels which have other characteristics than the widescreen ones. So you cannot say that all samsung panels are the best... As for the 14,1" and 15,4" I do not know if there are differences.
My T42 and T60 had standard screen panels and there were really sharp in comparison to my T61 widescreen samsung panel.

Is your widescreen a standard 1280 X 800 WXGA or is it a higher resolution WXGA+ panel??

It's a WSXGA+ panel. But I've also worked with T61 WXGA panels which are much better than mine.
I guess I'll have to get used to it...

All of this raised an interesting thought in my mind, so I went to AU Optronics' website and looked at a few specs:

Specs of their current 15.4" WXGA panel, I'm assuming this is used in the R61/T61
    http://auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?sec=notebook&func=info&product_id=89&items_id=2

Specs of their 15.4" WXGA+ panel (used in the Macbook Pro and others)
    http://auo.com/auoDEV/products.php?sec=notebook&func=info&product_id=151&items_id=2

They require the same supply voltage (3.3v). I wonder if it would be possible to hack an existing T61 with the WXGA+ panel. You'd get LED backlighting, thus lower power consumption and higher brightness (330 nits instead of 200), a wider viewing angle, AND the additional 1440 x 900 resolution, something Lenovo doesn't currently provide (something I would have paid for if they had).

I'm not willing to void my warranty at this point, but it's definitely something to ponder.

EDIT: I just noticed that the WXGA is single-channel LVDS, and the WXGA+ is two-channel. That might make it a no-go. :p

My 15.4" T61 WXGA has a FRU number of 42T0323. On this page it shows it to be a Samsung:

    http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cach...8233.html+42T0323+LG&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=6&gl=us

So I go to the Samsung site and that FRU doesn't match anything. All's I see are two possible suspects: LTN154X9 or LTN154AT. Which of these and how would you know?

FRU#'s are internal to Lenovo only. So to match FRU's to mfg's, you need to lookup info from Lenovo. MFG's like Samsung in this case won't have anything on FRU#'s.
