There are several things that make Vista a worthwhile upgrade over XP. One of them being much better memory management which means applications startup and run faster.

The thing I really dont like about vista is that it takes all the performance gains that PC's have acrued in the last few years and just obliterates them. So everything is prettier and more Mac-like but performance -wise The machines seem like an 800 mhz Slot1.
I'm sticking to Win2k and WinXP for as long as possible.

If I can figure out what services to disable, won't it run faster?

From the Lenovo site, newer Thinkpads offer:

"The Base Software Administrator (BSA) program is a versatile software utility that you can use to customize the recovery process for the Lenovo Preload. With BSA, you can customize the recovery process for computers and you can create personalization files used to automate the setup for Windows(R) based on the Lenovo Preload."
