I consider the T61 as one of the best ThinkPads I've had, I opted for the Intel GPU version and yet to have one problem, in fact it's still going strong to this day. The GPU issue is NVIDIA's fault rather than Lenovo's poor engineering for that particular case.

Ya any Nvidia faulted machines was not Lenovo's fault. Though I heard Lenovo started helping IBM starting with T4x design..

Very nice! :D Though I probably had Sean Connery in mind when I wrote that having just seen that "non-official" Bond movie a few hours back.

You know, its kind of funny. It just depends on your experience I guess. I also have a T61 that is still going strong to this day. nVidia GPU and T8300 CPU, used every day since it was new and still ticking away. Never in for repair, even running on Vista of all things :)

I actually haven't run across a bad Thinkpad yet. Maybe the old 770? It was fine, just still kinda big when the rest had pretty much slimmed down nicely.

Same with my T61 with the Nvidia; Zero problems. I saw someone post that later models weren't really affected as the problem was fixed. I got mine in the middle of 2008 and she is still around here somewhere waiting for this Ideapad to die.

Indeed, nVIDIA switched their soldering materials used for their chips somewhat in mid July 2008. So the general advice is that if your T61 with nVIDIA was produced starting 08/08 (August 2008), as shown to the right side of the serial number listed on the sticker at the machine's back side, then there should be no problem anymore.

Mine was produced in October 2007, but luckily i bought an additional two years warranty on top before the original warranty expired. This turned out to be almost a wise choice as the machine is starting to have it's first typical graphics related freezes. Even better and cheaper would have been to rather buy an Intel based replacement board instead, though.
