I am looking for a good, cheap and reliable portable laptop and I stumbled on this Z61t for sale on eBay for around $100 USD. The only catch is that the owner mentioned that the laptop won't POST and it has a 1-3-4-3 Beep Error Code, which I know it has something to do with bad RAM sticks.

However, I do know that sometimes it is not the RAM that went bad but the is the possibility that the motherboard got shot as well and it can't read the DIMM slots well anymore.

Knowing that I have access to DDR2-800 RAM and such, is it a good deal for me to buy this Z61t off of eBay and hope it is just RAM issue or just pass and look for a working Z61t. Thanks!

for $100 you might be getting a bargain, considering you have ddr2 ram already and wont need to upgrade.

then again if its a motherboard issue you might be getting a 100$ paperweight.

its up to you to decide if its worth the risk.

As a poor college student, $100 can make a difference though... However by past situations per se, is it more likely to just be dud RAM?

    HMM says:

    - Bad RAM
    - Bad DIMM(s)
    - Bad motherboard

For 100, you could part it out for more money. Or sell it to me for 30 dollars shipped. :D

I would keep looking, especially if you don't mind bidding you can get a decent laptop for around $100.

Lenovo ThinkPad T61 2 GHz Core 2 Duo 1 GB Laptop Notebook BIOS for parts (883609945763) | eBay (this needs a hard drive/battery/AC adapter though, but it's an example)
it doesn't have nvidia graphics so you wouldn't have to deal with that issue either.

Well I might pass on this offer. Going to see if I can get a better condition one off of eBay or something from around sub-$200. Like I could use the T40 back in my parent's place, but I really would think a Core 2 would be a better suited machine for the things I do on the computer than a really aging Pentium M.
