So, the "locate reseller" function on Lenovo's Web site is not working this evening. Does anyone know where can a person go to actually look at Lenovo's screens? I'm in Atlanta, GA.
I see that CompUSA carries one T60 model on their Web site -- do they have more in the stores?
I know I could order one, wait for it, use it for a month, and return it if I want to. But I don't want to. I want to stop shopping for a laptop and start using a laptop.

Did you try Office Depot?

The Thinkpad call support center is based in Atlanta, find out that location and see if you can stop by and there will be a treasure chest of ThinkPad notebooks. Or as Zaz says, take a more realistic approach and try Office Depot. I'm not sure, but it's possible they have a booth at the airport there as well, I've seen them with setups at a couple of the major airports in the country where they'll display a couple of ThinkPads.

Thanks, all. I called my local Office Depot and all they have is the N100s.
Worse yet, Lenovo also just changed their return policy and now there is the possibility of a restocking fee if you open the box! Phone rep said people were returning machines two and three times.

Well, amazingly, I struck out on finding a store in Atlanta that would admit to having a ThinkPad in stock. So the rep said she would note that on my account and they would almost certainly take it back open-box. So I went ahead and ordered one -- education pricing, preconfigured so that it should ship right away.
Here's the config:
2007C4U
Intel Core Duo T2500 / 2 GHz ( Dual-Core )
RAM 512 MB (installed) / DDR2 667 MHz - PC2-5300
Hard Drive 80 GB - Serial ATA-150 - 5400 rpm
DVD-Writer - plug-in module
14.1" TFT active matrix 1400 x 1050 ( SXGA+ )
ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 - 64 MB
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
I passed up the current Triple Play upgrade promotion ( here) because I didn't want the 9-cell battery, and I wanted discrete video, but the x1300 rather than the x1400 (which seems to be the only option on CTO 14" with SXGA+) -- to save power.
Hope I like it. Hope I get a good screen and keyboard.

There's a MicroCenter retail store in Marietta where there are likely several R-series notebooks. Their screens may be identical to 14.1" and 15" T60 SVGA+ screens.

People will take advantage of everthing. Like taking a notebook back to Costco after a year and half while their return policy was still lifetime only so they can get the newest technology.

The thing is, many corporations don't exactly set themselves up for sympathy by trying to wring every dollar out of the consumer and providing as little support as possible for their products. It's hard to blame people for playing the game when the "other side" is also treating it as a game.
Whoa, I think this just veered off-topic. To get it back on-topic: Did I mention that my Lenovo rep was very helpful and said that she owned a T4x herself? She basically convinced me to get the SXGA+. Hope she was right.

Dunno but I'm not sure that a rep can override the corporate policy on returns by writing a note... tho it makes sense.
Mind you, i have managed to return a final-sale EPP purchase onece (but it was unopened)
I have read the bad about the x1400 drain on the battery but some ppl really want the x1400 anyway because there are rumors that Aero Glass needs 128 video ram. just fyi, again i dunno -
AeroGlass does not need 128MB. It ran fine on my 64MB Radeon 9600. Yes, people abuse Costco's return policy. It is why computer purchases only have a six month return policy where they used to be lifetime.

[sarcasm on] People might otherwise go insane and adopt linux. -
In all seriousness, I think your reasoning makes total sense. It's only the paranoid side of me that wanted discrete gfx at all.

I have had the Vista Beta running on my V3000 with Intel 950 card. It ran fine, but Aero was not an option. I personally did not like Aero as it made things hard to read.

When I had is installed on my T42 the resolution was 1400x1050. AeroGlass makes things like the title bars transparent making them difficult to read at least for me. Here is a photo form Beta 1 when I had it installed on my T42.

Would like to see T60s in person
