Greetings Everyone!
Lets say Lenovo decides to have glossy option for every Thinkpad..would any of you actually take the plunge and go for glossy?
-
-
NO. matte finish only!
-
Iunno, I've used both, and glossy IS much better for quality (in my opinion), it seems more vibrant and bright, whereas the matte is dull, but the no glare on matte finish is AWESOME..
-
Thinkpads are meant to be business laptops and hence should be paired with matte screens.
-
Matte only thank you very much.
-
Nope. Had one glossy screen, don't want another. I got tired of seeing my reflection in it, and the glare off it in my office was really bad.
-
I would consider one. Given a choice, I'd probably lean matte, but each has it's own advantages. Picture quality is better on a glossy, but the glare can be annoying. Matte works better in well lit locales, but are dim. It's too bad they aren't offering the 300 nit MaxBright screen from the Z61m on either the T61 or R61.

Matte...one of the reasons I bought a Lenovo PC. And, my screen is crisp, bright and clear.
-
I'd stick with matte, but I know a few people who wouldn't mind a glossy screen. I'd consider it, but like ZaZ, I'll probably lean towards a matte screen.
-
I've seen a lot of really nice looking glossys (glossies?) in both desktop and notebook computers. Still, the LCD I have on my desktop I have now is matte, my roommate's desktop LCD is matte, and I have no problems with either of those.
So, I guess my final answer would be: interesting if it were an option, but I'll probably just stick with the matte screen. -
I do not mind a glossy screen at all, but given the option, I would lean a bit more towards a matte....especially on a thinkpad.
If I was purchasing a macbook, it would be glossy all the way. -
If glossy was the only option, I'd be shopping more than Lenovo the next time. I doubt this would become the only option anytime soon.
-
Unless you use your notebook to watch movies all the time, it is better to get a matte screen.
When you edit photographs, the colors are more accurately represented on a matte screen.
So, it is not just to reduce glare.
If Lenovo is smart, they would keep matte and offer glossy for the uneducated masses who wants to be wow at the shiny screen and they realized how terrible the glare is and buys another computer
Seriously though, professional photographers use matte screen. And we know a lot of Adobe customers use Mac and Apple is smart enough to offer both matte and glossy screen for their MBP. -
IMO:
- glossy screen sucks
- wide screen sucks
- Vista sucks -
-
Just curious, would it work to place a thin piece of glossy plastic over a matte screen and make it a temporary glossy screen?
-
-
I think the exact opposite of all three. (Except I can see advantages for non-widescreen.)
Thinkpad LCDs suck regardless of matte or glossy. My last two laptops were glossy and now I just got a new T60 with an LG WSXGA+ panel. Default color is off, dim as hell, can in no way match the vivid Dell Samsung panels I had. My roommates Toshiba kicks butt too. My next laptop will be glossy. If Lenovo's got 'em - I'll consider staying with them. Otherwise...
I think some of you need to live with a glossy screen for a while and then switch back to a matte one. How can anyone enjoyably work with such dim panels? -
-
Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
I went to staples last nite. Their shiny laptop screens drove me nut. but they look more pretty tho.
BTW how do I know if I have a samsung screen. Are all T61 WXGA has Samsung? -
Nope, one of the reasons I got a Thinkpad is for the matte screen. If they only offered glossy screens, I'd look elseware. It dissapoints me how few options there are for matte screen and high resolutions these days.
-
I move from a CRT to a LCD, so in turn I moved from having glare to no glare. I don't think I'd ever move back. I've had glossy LCDs before and they are sure nice, but my IPS panelled Thinkpad just kicks butt.
-
it's not lenovo who made the LCDs anyway. I really have no idea what others are encountering with their thinkpad screens, but my T61 LCD is awesome regarding brightness and quality. the viewing angle is not that good compared to other glossy ones, but again, this turns out to be a benefit for me and others whose privacy is highly concerned: no need to buy a screen privacy protector from 3M!
i also agree with HAMPROOF the matte finish is an ideal one for photo editing: true and accurate.
the only benefit of a glossy screen: you can use it as a mirror for you to look at yourselves when it's turned off -

For business purposes, a matte screen ThinkPad is my clear preference, for practical reasons. In addition a glossy screen just does not look right (IMO) in a business environment (depends on the industry). Too flashy and "unprofessional home user like" so to speak. It may sound conservative, but I think many professionals want to keep an image of being such, and glossy might give the opposite impression.
For private use and multimedia/movie watching I don't mind glossy screens at all, as they are very color vibrant. But then I'd like a different type of notebook to "match" the glossy screen. Somehow I do not think the ThinkPad design goes well with shiny screens. -
Matte, I hate the glare of glossies. And, ITS A THINKPAD. To some people, that is sacrilege.
-
 -
How about just give us a choice? That's how the MBP is sold. Let the individual decide between matte or glossy.

Next LCD monitor I buy will be glossy, but I prefer my Thinkpad's matte. It's all about the environment where I will use them.
-
I know it's probably not a big deal at all but I just don't like the ripples on the surface of the glossy screens. I have seen some laptops at my local BestBuy store which had reduced glare screens and I could live with that. I have to say that so far Apple 15" MBP's have the best looking LCD screens which show beautuful sharp colours and are Matte, so basically best of both worlds. Too bad they're beyond my budget for now.
-
I want to be able to work on my deck in good weather so the matte finish is a must. My son has the dv6000 and the glossy screen looks great...still, I paid extra for the anti-glare on my plasma so why would I want glare on my laptop? I wouldn't but in the right light, the glossy does look nice.
-
Visually there's a huge difference between a really good (read: really expensive) glossy LCD and a run-of-the-mill (read: crap) glossy LCD.
By a really good glossy LCD, I'm talking about something like Toshiba's 15" UXGA Clear Advanced Super View and 17" WUXGA dual-CCFL Ultimate TruBrite LCDs where both LCD types feature incredible contrast ratios.
IOW simply giving a low-end LCD, typically featuring a laughably low contrast ratio, a glossy finish doesn't make the LCD any better than a matte LCD I've found. If anything, all the extra reflections seen on the glossy LCD just mask its pitiful mediocrity. -
nope matte only
-
Matte for me. I have to be able to use this thing outside.
Glossy screens are way-bad for digital photography. -
I have no problems with the glossy at home or at my desk at work, but i also work in all sorts of lighting conditions and Matte is just better for this.
I also find depending on the size of the screen depends on the glare, i had a 8.9" P1610 that totally sucked but sitting beside my wife and her 15.4" Inspiron i see some glare but nothing that bothers me.
I just wish Lenovo would have brighter screens. -
I prefer matte LCD.
-
Sorry guys for my bad font size. I will correct it.
-
No thank you. I love my matte screen better than bling bling screen
-
My 3000 had a Glossy screen and I rather liked it.
As to "professional" well that's a set of prescriptions that men have come up with and I don't pay much attention to that. -
The reason I bought the Thinkpad T61 is because of the matte screen. Had a Dell e1505 and hated it.
Would you buy GLOSSY screen Thinkpad?
