I'm planning to carry a new laptop around daily my backpack in addition to textbooks and notebooks.
It's not an ultraportable, but do you think it's light enough to not be a big bother? (4.8 pounds)
Also, is the footprint small enough to easily fit in a backpack?
It definitely looks more sturdy than ultraportable notebooks (Sony Z being another I'm considering).
-
-
that depends on backpack-you can fit sager 9262 in some
-
What about the weight? -
You're not just carrying the notebook are you? I think 4.8 lbs might be a bit on the heavy side especially if you're thinking about carrying it around the campus. The number seem like small, but it can really be heavy at points.
-
Well I just sat down in the library having walked 10 minutes, carrying a messenger (which is more annoying to carry than a backpack, but looks more badass) containing:
- my 4.8lb laptop and cord
- 2 1-inch coil notebooks
- a 4-inch criminal law text
- and some random ****
I don't find it particularly onerous to carry around my laptop and texts all day and imagine you can cope just fine with it...unless you're an 80 lb girl or something....then you might reconsider -
Wait for the IdeaPad U330 in 13.3, same category as the Sony Z, both are more portable than the T400.
If you really prefer TP, then take a look at the SL300, another 13.3 notebook.

I'm also going to be carrying my T400 from class to class....I don't think it will be that big of a deal, especially cause I'm used to lugging textbooks everywhere too.
I say go for the Lenovo - it definitely seems sturdier, and has a better GPU (if you're considering discrete graphics). And if you plan on having it for a while (say, more than 3 years?), it can take up to 8GB of RAM. That said...the Sony Z does look awesome as well.... -

4.8lbs sounds like nothing, but you will feel it and regret it eventually if you are carrying it around every day. There is a reason they make notebooks that weigh 2.7 lbs.

Coming form someone who usually has an SLR with 2 lenses, 3 days worth of clothes, camcorder, all required AC adapters, and a 15" notebook on him at all times traveling... anything in the 3-6lb range is nothing. It is only when you get up into the 8+ range where you really start to notice.
In any case, weight of the T400 is 4lb 9oz w/o battery (dedicated graphics model)
the 9 cell battery adds 1lb 1.8oz, and the 6 cell adds 11.9oz
The only case where I see a super lightweight notebook coming in handy is if you are a girl, and carry a purse. Netbooks in the +/- 2lb range can easily slip in a purse. If you are a guy, I suppose you could carry it in a cargo pocket, but that is pushing it. -

Remember, there is only like a 3lb difference that we are arguing about. Eat some lightweight food before class, dont drink down a gallon of milk, or perhaps find PDF's of schoolbooks -
I'm currently lugging around a 9lb eMachines 6805 so 4.x pounds sounds good to me lol.

Don't think that ur heavy laptop is a problem, look at it as a "ultimate portable gym". Just carry it in 1 arm, next the other, maybe some running, and in a couple of weeks u'll be the hotest man in ur college AND with a good laptop.
(my mom told me that when I told her i wanna a X300, replacing of my Lenovo 3000 N100) -
Disclaimer: I did not get an X300 to impress chicks. There're better ways to do that. -
I switched from a T42 to my current X60 for exactly your reasons: that I was going to be carrying it around in my backpack all day. I absolutely love my X60, its very sturdy + light, lighter than most books I'd have in my pack. The grass is always greener, however, and over these past 2 years I've become jealous of laptops with discreet graphics and bigger screens - so I'm just hoping I can deal with the weight of the t400 when I get it. If you really just want portability though, get an ultraportable...
-
I see that many people actually carry 15.4" laptop around the campus....carrying a 14" laptop like T400 should have no problem....even in backpack or any case (recommend the sleeves though)...Therefore....I absolutely think it is portable
-
, I think it's not a bad thing to have on the road for doing basic tasks. But of course, the X200 will be a better choice.
Is it just me or all these manufacturers are tricking people with these netbooks? They're basically repackaged old technology with some new technology on it. -
I carry my 15.4" T61p around all the time at school. Along with 4-5 textbooks. I am pretty skinny and tall, but I think even a smaller person wouldn't have trouble with a 14.1" T400.

I think the 14.1 notebooks are perfect, not to big not to small. I could carry my T61 14.1 around anywhere, That and i like to have a touchpad, X61 X200 dont have one.
-
screw it, i bet most would be fine carrying the t500 around too
-
As long u don't carry ur desktop, everything will be fine.
-
...
...seriously?
Only 8+ lb. is a problem? I can't say I much enjoy carrying a 7 lb. laptop around now :/
My sister's is 5.5 lb. and I consider that to not be very portable (though definitely not a huge problem, but still annoying) -
I carried around a 15.4" T61P with the 9 cell battery AND charger for a while. Don't think I'll be doing that again, and I'm not small or weak. An MBP, at 5.4 lbs, felt light in comparison but still a bit too heavy to lug around all day, especially with books and other crap thrown in. I think I'll be getting something lighter this time around.
-
Well the thing is carrying 7 pound for an hour is definitely not a comfortable experience regardless of your stregnth. I personally think 6 pounds+ laptop arae useless because they lack portabliitly, but I am by no mean "weak". In fact I am pretty confident I can squat and bench alot more than most pp.. -
Your both weak. jk
I carried about 25lbs worth of stuff last year for school. It wasn't fun, and it wasn't easy but it is possible.

for me is easy to decide> a x300 is +2500$. a T400 + personal doctor= 2000$.
It's cheaper to live with that. -
The problem isn't the 6lb notebook, it is all the textbooks and other crap. I use a T40 at work and carry it and a technician's tool bag around with me frequently and it isn't too bad. When I was in college I lugged around an Inspiron 6000 and a bunch of books. I will say this, if you can rent a locker central to your classes, invest in one! Saved my back the last two semesters at school.
Would you consider the T400 to be pretty portable?
