The LCD manufacturers could have drastically cut production and there could be other factors, so it's anyone's guess.

Is the LED vs CCFL really noticeable?

I can live without the instant on or the extra brightness.

What I am concerned about are the viewing angles and the overall picture quality e.g. the colors.

Picture quality and color are not necessarily better on an LED panel. In fact, people have reported that the LED has more of an overly-blue tint than the CCFL display.

Battery life and brightness will obviously be inferior on the CCFL panel though.

Im not concerned about batt life. I think the 4 cell can manage 3 hours, that's really all I need because there is an outlet in every single lecture hall seat.

I guess the CCFL won't be that bad then.

Its not too bad! I have one of the early WXGA+ CCFL's and its perfectly fine unless you are really picky about screens. Horizontal viewing angles are decent while verticals are not too bad although the screen does tend to have its sweet spot.

I have a T61 with a CCFL WXGA+ screen and it's fine, although a bit dimmer than an LED at maximum brightness. On the other hand, I also just received a W500 with a CCFL WSXGA+ and the new screen is remarkably bright for a cathode - almost as bright as my XPS m1330 with LED.

The difference in overall picture quality in terms of color reproduction and viewing angles between the two backlights is negligible. If you want to get really picky, as midnightsun already stated, the panels themselves in both cases without calibration tends towards a slightly high color temp (i.e. bluish) which is excerbated by the LED backlight.

I think it could be due to manufacturers cutting down on 16:10 LCDs?

I was searching on LG's website for the 1440x900 CCFL LCD and it seems they no longer have it.

it is possible to order WXGA+ LED right now if the place you work at has a purchasing contract with Lenovo (i ordered one recently and waiting for it to arrive now). Also it appeared as an option week week or two on one of the sales Lenovo had. It would only come up if you clicked configuration through the sale banner on lenovo web site. It was only available with camera and on a model with integrated graphics.

I have a feeling that Lenovo is just holding out and building up stock up to avoid the disaster they had with hordes of angry customers due to delays in february-april. I bet supply issues with panels have been sorted out, after all Dell is not having any trouble with e6400 which uses same resolution/size LED panel.
