Hi guys, pretty new to Thinkpads and have a couple questions.

    1. Am I correct that the X3X series use 2.5" harddrives and that it can take 5400 and 7200 rpm disks?

    2. Which size HD does the X4X use? I have heard it is 1.8" and that it can't use anything but 4200 rpm drives. Is that correct?

Not only can the X4x only take 1.8" 4200RPM drives, it can only take a certain type of Hitachi 1.8" drive. Seagate's about to come out with an 80GB 1.8" drive, but it won't work in the X4x because of connectors being different.

The X3x, OTOH, can take any 2.5" PATA drive.

Not unusual for ThinkPads to not accept other drives. T4xs have issues with other drives as well.

    zazonz: Make that T4 3.

Anyway, apparently there's a Seagate drive that doesn't give the 2010 error on it...

as far as i know, the x41/t43 series are curently using pata drives with pata->sata adapter... and thats making alot of problems, and thats why only certain disks work with these...

maciekk: That is true. However, it's a non-issue on the X41, seeing as the only hard drives that PHYSICALLY work with the X41 are ones that have the correct firmware to work with the PATA to SATA adaptor.

Ok, thanks guys. This is for an older X30. It has a 40GB 4200rpm drive now and I plan to upgrade that to a 100GB 5400 rpm Hitachi drive.

How much battery life would I loose by upgrading from a 4200 to a 5400 rpm drive?

I noticed a few minutes drop on my X21 with a horribly worn battery, but not much.

    I was upgrading from a 20GB 4200rpm drive to a 40GB 5400rpm drive, though... (I hate small children, or otherwise, I wouldn't have upgraded...)
