    X1 (5th Gen.) SSD Upgrade Possible?

    I am about to order a 5th generation X1 Carbon and need to know if I can upgrade the SSD to one of my choosing? I cannot justify paying the upgrade prices, nor do I have the budget for anything more than a 128GB SSD.

    I recall in the past something about a "whitelist" for upgrading on your own... can anyone confirm that I would be able to buy the Samsung 960 1TB Pro and the X1 Carbon 5th gen will accept it?

    I bought mine with the 128. I pulled it with the factory image still on it. I then installed https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LYFKJR7 and installed Win10 Pro from scratch using the embedded key. No issues at all.

    Hi Thors,

    My X1 arrives tomorrow and I am awaiting delivery of the Samsung EVO drive you ordered. When you swapped out the drive, booted and reloaded Windows, did you need to load any drivers in the BIOS to get the X1 to recognize or ensure maximum performance between the drive, motherboard, bios, and Windows? Or was it just a drive swap, reload Windows, and go?

    Also, are there any special setting in the BIOS, for example AHCI, that need to be enabled or should be turned on?

    Lastly, should I install the Windows 10 driver for the SSD from Samsung website?

    Hi Ducati,

    Remember to format your new SSD AS GPT and create your Windows installation disk usb as gpt as well.so that it can boot in the new UEFI environment then you can get into bios and switch off legacy boot mode. Now your computer will boot a few seconds faster.

    Hi Thors
    I'm new on this board, but have had my X1 Carbon for a few months now- I love it.
    I need a little more space than the 256Gb SSD that's in it at the moment. Could you give me some ideas on the process you took to upgrade... and which drive I should look for.
    There are a variety of drives available, and I don't know which will install (new to this M.2 format!)

    Your advice is very welcome!
