Does anyone have good color settings that I could use for my X1?

Just to follow-up. I went out and purchased a Spyder4 monitor calibrator. The difference is amazing. The barn door effect seems to be minimized and the color is a little muted but much more realistic. Highly recommend it.

Any chance you could share the resulting color profile?

Here's an Eye-One calibrated ICC profile for the X1 Carbon.

Edit 12/3/2012: replaced previous ICC zip file with X1_Carbon_EyeOne-New.zip

As shipped, my X1 Carbon's display had a bad bluish color cast. Even without special calibration hardware, this can be largely corrected in Windows Color management by reducing the blue slider more than half the way to the left and moving the green about a quarter of the way left.

I corrected the color further by using an Eye-One colorimeter and associated calibration software. As calibrated, the color is fairly close to that of my X220, but the latter's IPS screen is somewhat more saturated and has much wider viewing angles. Even for use for preliminary photo editing while traveling, I find the X1 Carbon's screen acceptable. Now I am off to try out MiB's profile...

Thanks! Unfortunately I didn't have much luck loading the profile on linux so far. Both tools I tried (dispwin and xcalib) seem to insist that it's invalid:

    Code:
    [timo@tp ~ ]xcalib X1_Carbon_EyeOne.icc
Warning - invalid content of table vcgt, starting with 9079108

What would be the right way to apply the profile? I thought I followed the normal steps in Colour Management (W8) but it somehow does not seem to be willing to let itself be applied to the screen as output device.

The original version you posted did not work, but this one does. Thanks for sharing this.

I tried this for a couple of hours, but I prefer the default color profile and have reverted to that. It is easy enough to install, so others should give it a try and see what they think as it is likely to be quite subjective.

Well, that was then. After spending many hours comparing the X1 Carbon display with the IPS+ display on my X220, I reluctantly concluded that I CANNOT LIVE with the X1 Carbon for PHOTO-EDITING. The TN display tends to blow out highlights, create too much contrast, is too blue. The greatest problem is the hypersensitivity of the colors on X1 Carbon's display to slight variations in the vertical angle of the display. Look at the last few solid color pages of this test and vary the monitor angle and see the radical change in hue. Single-page version. So I am selling my X1 Carbon and keeping the X220.

There seems to be some confusion as to whether the Touch is actually going to come with an IPS screen - do you have some details?

I haven't been able to apply an ICC profile other than the default. I can add it and select it as the default, even as the system default, but it makes no difference, color never changes.

Ok I was able to apply the Eye-One calibration included in this thread, I was having difficulty trying to apply an Adobe RGB profile. I should add that I like the Eye-Once ICC, thanks.

Just adding this helpful info from Dayton about applying color profiles. Same procedures apply if you're doing this on Windows 7:

Wow this is so much better. I used to have my Windows 8 on my X230 set to blue for the window color but I found that made it seem like it was even more blue tinted on the display. So I then picked a gray color, the "second" one on the list of default colors to help a bit. Finally got this profile loaded, and that "gray" isn't even, it's actually brown!!! Now it shows up properly so this looks like it's been a huge improvement thanks so much.

Just wanted to add if this helps anyone else, when you click Add and select the profile, it doesn't just appear on the list of profiles, that was my problem. You have to then click Add again, and now it will be on THAT list of profiles for you to actually choose it to have it add to the list and can then select it as the default profile there.

After calibration with a spyder 4 I love my x1 screen.

The review page said it covered 93% sRGB which is the same as my dell ips 24" ultrasharp got.

    My T420 got 62% coverage.

Here you go. I did 4 Temperatures, in various conditions. I actually like the 7500K one.

    http://softronix.com/misc/Spyder4CarbonX1.zip

The Eye 1 post barely looks any different than stock settings.

    By the way:

    T420 - 62% sRGB
Dell UltraSharp IPS - 93% sRGB
Mac Book Air IPS - 62% sRGB
    X1 Carbon - 93% sRGB

Thanks for posting your color profiles. I like the 6500K. I also like the Eye-One profile but I would have to notch the HD 4000 Gamma down to 0.9, with your color profile I can keep it at the default. To me the shipping X1CT color profile is far too cold, that is unless it has been changed.

To be honest I lost track of the "Stock" Calibration.

    Couple reasons.

One thing I don't like about the Spyder Software is, after you're done it's basically "bloatware". It wanted to remind you to recalibrate every 2 weeks by default, yeah right.

The software was also very slow to reload the calibration after boot.

But after that first 6500K calibration it was a huge jump from very cool to very warm.

So I uninstalled it. But the profiles would not take effect. After poking around on the Web I learned you HAVE to run through Windows Color Calibrartion ONCE in order to enable any profile.

Once I did that (going through Windows Built in Gamma Wizard) it looked MUCH better than it was, when shipped. That calibration is extremely close to the Eye-One posted.

After I did that it was hard to get back to the original very cool as shipped calibration.

Another thing that can mess you up is your eyes adjust/compensate for what ever profile you use.

Yes the often overlooked trick is to set "Use Windows display calibration". Anyway, thanks again for the 6500K color profile, while close to the Eye-One profile it isn't as bright which was that profiles only flaw to my eyes.

Lenovo pushed a new display driver via windows update (windows 8) a few days ago (Lenovo Maxbright LCD or something similar)

Also includes a new ICC profile - anyone had a look at it ? I can't tell if its that different to be honest.

I did the update, installed a new monitor driver. Wasn't sure about a new ICC, I checked around but they all appeared to have the same "too cold" look of the shipping ICC so assumed it was just a monitor update.

    Hello all,
thanks for the thread and the ICC profiles that i have all tried.
I have been strugling with a pinkish red color of my screen (the red color is more pink that red). Does anyone have this problem?
To check if you have the same problem as me, click this link. If you see the flower "red", well that's perfect.
If it seems more pink that red, you have the same problem I have.
Thanks for the feedback on this issue (all the other colours have a good rendering).

Keen to get a profile for the 2014 QHD Touch screen
