I've been trying to work out getting some extra storage space on an X1 Carbon that I've ordered for my wife for Christmas. It'll have the 256 SSD but I wish it had a 500. However....I was wondering what the down side would be of just leaving a 64 GB SDHC cared in the slot for document storage? This could help alot if it'll work and she can just leave the card in the slot.

Your wife is a very lucky lady! You can use a card for additional storage, but it will be far slower than the SSD.

Kind of unrelated but did you get a ship date and when did you order? I wanted to get a 256GB one but was put off by the estimated shipping delay of 4+ weeks right now. Incidentally you may want to look for UHS-I cards which are supposed to be a bit faster than normal class 10 cards . I've been thinking of doing the same thing if I end up settling for a 128GB model.

I use a 32gb SDHC card for music storage on my T400. Do not worry too much about speed when it comes to SDHC storage. You may be able to get by with a Class 6 or Class 10 SDHC if you are simply going to be using the card for storing data such as music, documents, or pictures. Speed matters most when the performance of your (OS) operating system is contingent upon what media your operating system runs off. An OS is going to perform (and is dependent on) a constant stream of random read-and-writes throughout the period when the OS is loaded to the time it is shut down. This is the reason why the mechanical and rotational speed of a platter drive cannot match the speed and performance of the non-mechanical performance of NAND-flash technology. With an SDHC for storage the only time speed might matter is if you are writing a huge amount of data (as in gigabytes) to the SDHC card. I would advise against the practice of doing this (as in everyday) on a constant basis as deleting and rewriting huge blocks of data to your SDHC card will significantly decrease the lifetime of the card. Look for an SDHC that carries a good warranty, is at least a Class 6 or 10 (transferring data to SDHC will be faster than a Class 2 or 4), and as good practice make back ups to your OS and SDHC card while you are it. Good luck :)

Sorry haven't checked here and just noticed your question. I ordered the X1 back in November...don't recall the exact date but early to mid-November with a projected delivery of Dec. 15th. It arrived the 12th. Sitting its little box waiting to be wrapped. There's a 30 day return policy with return shipping costs provided by Lenovo so I really can't go wrong.
