Just unpacked X1, also got the usb optical drive.

I plug it in and the light comes on for a few seconds, so it is getting power. However it does not show up in explorer? Any ideas. We can't access the drive, know media is good.......

    Cute.

Actually it vast stupidity. The cable has a y connection for reg/min usb. Plugged the wrong full size connector to laptop. The fact it was getting power threw me.

    My bad.

    Oh, that's good to know.

Quick question then, the optical drive you bought only requires power from a single USB connector then? Does it work equally well on both of the X1 Carbon USB ports? They are definitely different and the reason I am asking.

My previous comment was a quote from someone else and a violation of forum law. I will penalize myself. :D

Yes it is powered from either port. I thought I read that the one on the right side is the high speed port. I used that one to install office 2010.
Went pretty quick. I read some music in from the left port, wasn't too bad but I was not paying attention to speed.

I bought the slim external drive (black) from Lenovo.
