Got mine today (i7/500-nit FHD w/ IR cam) and I'm very happy so far, even coming from my P1.

Build quality with the past generation X/P-series has been described as "inconsistent" by many (including myself), but I have to say that the screen installation and general feeling of the hardware (different keyboards were a known issue) seem improved. Obviously, I am only looking at a sample-size of one here with the X1E G2, but I've had enough experiences with poor QC with dozens of laptops over the past few years to be grateful.

I ordered one a few days ago.....and will likely be waiting a while for it. Estimated ship date is September 16.

Ordered mine over the weekend. Also looking at a 9/17 ship date. Have SSD and memory to upgrade when it gets here.

Went through the Lenovo “TicketsAtWork” portal. They had 50% off the X1E2 (still available) plus an additional 5% discount that ended Sunday.

I bought it direct from Lenovo using their Employee Purchase Program. Working for a certain company that’s often associated with the color blue has its advantages.

I’ve read that the quoted delivery time is almost never correct. I hope this is true because I don’t want to wait nearly an entire month for my computer.

Sound quality is worse on Gen 2 than Gen 1, lol. Everything else seems better. Keyboard backlight is a bit dimmer (2nd stage on gen 2 like 1st stage on gen 1). Thermals better.

7500 or so in firestrike with temps hitting 70c on CPU and 68C on GPU.

Battery life for me is around 8 hours working in Vivaldi with discord, YouTube, and Google docs.

Screen is pretty nice, but imo it's not as nice as the FHD in the XPS 15 in terms of contrast. The black levels aren't great.

Will do more testing when I have time

Wow, it is so much cheaper in US than uk!
The base model starts at £1750 and best voucher I can get is 10% off!

Ordered the base model i5 with upgraded 1080p screen for £1630

Should have flown over to America and saved money.

Well here is hoping it is better than the 300nit screen in the gen 1. That was a horrible panel, had a really horrible blurry effect and pwm which gave me headaches. Mine went straight back, loved the machine other than the screen. Here is hoping the new 500nit panel doesn’t give me headaches

This comes direct from a Lenovo representative, the high shipping time on custom systems is caused by the display option (FHD Dolby Vision HDR 400). Supposedly, they've got a shortage of these panels, which is resulting in higher than usual shipping times.

That was the same excuse for the Legion Y740's delay, w.r.t. 500nit FHD 15.6", so there is probably some merit.

Since yesterday morning, I've been told by multiple people that their computers have been delayed for the same reason. Then, a user on Reddit told me that a replacement FHD Dolby Vision HDR 400 panel for their computer was on back order. So yeah, pretty sure this is a legit shortage. I'm guessing Lenovo underestimated the demand for this display option.

Thanks for the info on the pricing, forgot about the employee discounts. Topcashback also has 12% cash back right now.

I was going to pull the trigger the trigger a FHD with 9750H and 400 nits, would have been ~$1170 after cash back. Unfortunately Lenovo doesn't ship to freight forwarders and I am on an oversea assignment. Ended up getting a Gen 1 4k instead.

I received an email last week notifying me that my order was delayed. However, the estimated ship date never changed. Ordered August 22nd, estimated ship of September 16th.

Not sure what to make of that. UHD panel, 9750H, 256GB SSD, 8GB ram.

I ordered my custom X1 Extreme Gen 2 (with 15.6" FHD HDR400 display and a lot of memory) on 8/26 and it arrived 9/17, with possibly a couple of days delay on my end.

    Yup, just saw this option too: 15.6" UHD (3840 x 2160) 400 nits, OLED, AR/AS, multi-touch with Dolby Vision™ HDR 400 with IR & 720p HD Camera

How would you guys compare the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2 to the new XPS 15 7590?

Aw thanks for sharing! Just added stuff today as I finally had time to run some benchmarks. XPS 15 is faster as the X1E seems to throttle at 80C for some reason (hitting this ticks the "prochot 96C" flag visible in ThrottleStop), but at the same time, that likely means the ThinkPad is going to have more longevity, if my experience serves me right. They are also much more repairable due to availability of parts and modularity. You're looking at 8-10% more performance with a well-tuned XPS 15 7590 vs the X1E G2 same specs

What do you love about it

    @custom90gt

I was looking at a video about the ports on this laptop and I am happy that it has an SD Card reader slot. But I saw that it doesn't have a conventional LAN Port and it looks like a USB-Type C kinda port which has the network logo on it, does the laptop come with a converter to plugin in standard RJ45 network cables?

A converter is available when ordering. It's a breakout dongle, the first gen one from Lenovo. It is often OOS when ordered separately.

One more thing I'd add about the XPS 15: Dell's laptops play a bit better with docks, just in general. I've noticed this with the XPS 15 and my eGPUs vs my X1 carbon and X1 extremes in the past. I think it's because Dell had the AW graphics amp for years and they've got a bit more experience with such functionality in the BIOS. Lenovo does not.

Just in case this is useful information for anyone else, based on my testing (described below) it seems that despite the fact that the X1 Extreme Gen 2 uses a Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 controller and the USB-C video outputs are wired to the NVIDIA GPU rather than the Intel GPU, the system does NOT support DisplayPort 1.3 or 1.4 over USB-C. It seems limited to DisplayPort 1.2. That means the USB-C outputs would not provide enough bandwidth for setups like 4K 60 Hz HDR using 4:4:4, or 5K 60 Hz SDR over a single DisplayPort interface (as opposed to using TB3 or two physical DisplayPort connections). It would also affect the types of multi-display setups that can be run via daisy-chaining, and it means DisplayPort DSC would not be available.

My test to determine DisplayPort support level went as follows. I had a 4K 60 Hz TV with an HDMI 2.0 input and an HDMI cable rated for 4K 60 Hz. I first validated the TV and cable setup by connecting to the X1E's built-in HDMI 2.0 output, which allowed me to run 4K 60 Hz as expected. Then I connected this same TV and cable to the HDMI output on a Dell DA300 adapter. This adapter is a useful test because unlike most multi-purpose adapters currently on the market, it will support 4K 60 Hz as long as the host system supports DisplayPort 1.3 or better. If the host system only supports DisplayPort 1.2, then only 30 Hz will be possible. I was only able to select 30 Hz when running 4K resolution through the DA300. (For those who are curious, the reason DP 1.3 is required for 4K 60 Hz through the DA300 is that multi-purpose adapters like this configure the USB-C interface so that two of the four high-speed links are allocated to supporting USB 3.x data, leaving only two lanes for DisplayPort HBR traffic. USB 2.0 if used is carried over a separate set of pins dedicated to that purpose. Two lanes of HBR2 (DP 1.2) is only enough for 4K 30 Hz, although two lanes of HBR3 (DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4) is enough for 4K 60 Hz. By comparison, a simple USB-C to DisplayPort cable allocates all four high-speed links in the USB-C interface to video, since such a cable has no need to carry USB 3.x, and consequently that type of cable would allow 4K 60 Hz even from a DP 1.2 system.)

Has anyone bought X1 Extreme with 8 Cores? Do you think it will get too hot for such a slim chassis? Will it throttle down too much that it would be pointless to buy the 8 cores version?

    Hello,

I'am hesitating about buying this laptop or the XPS 7590.. I read that in the X1 extreme 1gen, a lot of people had coil whine problem. Did you notice it on this generation ?

There is absolutely minimal coil whine - my T450s has it about 6x as loud, and that didn't bother me as long as i was a reasonable amount away from the laptop (i.e. not ear directly on the laptop).
The Dell has a bigger battery, probably a better screen (even if Lenovo stepped up a bit in the last few years), a (waaaaay) more shallow and mushy keyboard and less thermal capacity -> less actual power.

What to me is staggering, that they keep releasing and then pulling BIOS versions off the release channel. I am still on 1.29-1.22 and will stick there, as I got massive temp increases with 1.30 and all other BIOS updates weren't critical. For whatever reason now 1.34 is not on the "System Update"-release channel anymore, but still in "Vantage. I just give up and stick with what I have for now, battery life is ok, temps and fan noise are ok. And undervolting works with 1.29-1.22 just fine.
