What is the best product for re-pasting the X1 extreme? Hoping to make the machine cooler under load.
I hear liquid metal is a good option

I read a few months back in one of the computer magazines that the magazine editors visited an Intel lab and they saw a tub of KingPin paste that was being used to cool down chips that were being overclocked. I recently ordered some for myself, but have not had a tech come over yet to take my system apart to put it on the CPU. The website is www.kingpincooling.com.

I am looking to do the same thing: 3 Questions:

Are the pads on the north and south bridges and on the heat sink wing as seen in graphite thermal pads or something else?
My cooling system has the FRU PN 02XR044. I can see other part numbers associated with 02XR044 namely 01AY981 and 01YU923. Is there any difference between these part numbers, for instance the fan connectors or fan manufacture? SUNON, DELTA, FCN for instance?
Are there any better performing (later revision) fans that can be connected to the heat sink assembly?

From what I have gathered, the 02XR044, 01YU923 and 01AY981 are all identical cooling units made by SUNON. They are just part number options / revisions from oldest to newest with no performance or quality improvements. It looks like re-pasting is the only really viable way currently to help with the battery life and thermal throttling on the x1e gen2s.
Is any one able to verify this?

OK here is what I have found out.
The 01AY981 and 01YU932 are equivalent parts for the Gen 1 P1 20ME/MD and the Gen 1 X1E 10MF/MG with discreet graphics. These have the 1.5mm pitch 8.5mm wide 6 pin fan plugs on both sides.
The 02XR044 is for the Gen 2 P1 20QT/QU and Gen 2 X1E 20QV/QW with discreet graphics. They have one 1.5mm pitch 8.5mm wide 6 pin plug on the rear left and one 1.0mm pitch 5.5mm wide 6 pin plug on the rear right.

It was quite simple but sure was a mess in there. Used Arctic Silver 5 for thermal paste and Arctic thermal pads. 20200506_162317242_iOS.jpg 20200506_185810463_iOS.jpg

Thanks, I have gone for Liquid Metal Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut 77W/mK and Fujipoly Ultra Extreme XR-m Thermal Pads 17.0 W/mK, removing the filter screen, porting the back panel grilles and undervolting.
