I Bought my new Leonovo Thinkpad X120e 10 days back. I get excessive heat from bottom of the laptop. I am unable to keep the laptop on my LAP for more than 5mins.. its so much heat. Initially its not so hot, but quickly the heat increases. I am also getting heat from left side of the laptop. I think its from the heat ventilator. I installed TPFAN control software to look for temperatures. The CPU temp reads between 53 to 67 degree C.

I took my laptop to a local lenovo service provider and he replaced Thermal module FRU 04W1380. I thought the problem would be okay. But the same heat from bottom of the laptop and from side. The most annoying thing is the heat from bottom. I preferred small laptop as I can keep it on my lap and work for few hours. I am very disspointed with the heat. Can someone help me to solve this issue or is it normal that X120e dissipates heat from bottom of the laptop?

    Thank you

With stock settings, the bottom of my X120e was cool to the touch, so it does seem a bit abnormal. Use Task Manager or Process Explorer to monitor CPU usage over time and see if there's anything that continues to use a high CPU percentage.

To lower operating temperatures, you can try undervolting your X120e (see link in my signature). That will reduce power consumption and therefore also reduce heat output.

Ramp1610, is this heat output at idle, or while you are using the computer for a specific application? Or just in general?

If you open the task manager, what is your processor/cpu usage?

Brenda, Heat output is when I use the computer.. browse websites/ view you tube video. In general whenever I use the computer for more than 10-15 minutes the machines warms up so quick and dissipates heat from bottom of the machine. The CPU usage is usually between 15-30%. I opened 3 websites and watch one you tube video the CPU usuage goes upto 47% (fluctuates)

there is probably something wrong with your X120e's heatsink/heatpipe or the heatsink is not properly fitted (or with insufficient thermal paste).

Youtube videos are demanding of the processor. Expect heat. But, if Lead_org thinks there might be a heat issue, I might call Lenovo.

I replaced my machine's thermal module from Lenovo. The machine is much better now. Thank you all for your replies.

So they sent you a new heatsink assembly?

I'm a little worried as I just bought a new x120e as a laptop that would run cooler and be more comfortable to use than my current 3d/cad dell precision m4400....

Robin, I mailed my notebook to Lenovo and they replaced it. I do not have any heat issues now. One thing I see on x120e bottom side is, there is a ventilation unit just below the serial number and we should make sure we dont block it. I usually use a pillow on my lap then i place my laptop.. sometimes the ventilation is blocked which increases the temperature of the notebook.. thats my understanding.
