If I'm in a silent room, I can hear a fairly quiet, but high-pitched beeping sound coming from the laptop. It is sort of annoying when I'm the only one in the room, because it is fairly high-pitched. It's not the hard drive, because I replaced it with a SSD, so I'm thinking it has to be something else.

Anyone else notice this, or is mine defective?

my last dell did the same thing... its not normal.. but not risky, since it did it for 2 years and counting... no idea what it is though... i came to think it was the electricity flowing through the laptop but... no idea

It might be the CPU. Does it go away if you do anything CPU intensive?

Apparently, this is completely normal and has been written about extensively under the term "cpu whine."

It, however, does not affect all systems, and it affects my W500. I am unsure if I want to get rid of this notebook b/c of this really annoying whine. I mean, I had a Dell xps m1330 that had this whine, but no other systems, so clearly some systems don't possess it, even though most people say it's normal.
