I just noticed now but it has been making very loud fan noises. I've never heard such loud fan noise before.

It was so loud once that I could hear from far away.

It is continually running. I reboot and it got lesser but I still can hear. It sounds like it's motor running.. continuously running.. like mini RC car when I put my ear by the fan.

But I can still hear a bit from far away.

    What could be the problem?

The heatsink could be loose, the thermal paste may need to be replaced, there could be a program pegging your CPU to ~100%, etc.

What is the CPU temperature when the fan is loud?

    It seems okay now......

All I did was turn on my laptop and opened a PDF file via Google Chrome at the time of loud fan noise.

It's quiet now like all other times though.

I'm not sure what could have gone wrong.

Mine started doing this after I updated the BIOS, I went in to the BIOS and selected "balanced" somewhere in the power settings and it stopped, I also added i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 to the kernel boot parameters and have gone from ~4hrs to ~5hrs without a noticeable hit in performance.

    (running ubuntu 11.10)

I'm not sure if this matters but I ran intensive Eclipse compile/running that took me about 4-6 hours. I did this the day before and for couple days. I didn't do this at the time the loud fan noise occured though.

I had BIOS updated quite awhile ago (whenever the last BIOS was released - July(?))
